Hello everyone,

I'm planning on acquiring a new CPU, motherboard and 16 gigs of RAM for my gaming PC with a budget of 650€. My goal is to get the most performance out of my budget.

My current setup:

Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.30GHz
Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology
RAM
8,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Mobo
ASRock P67 Pro3 (CPUSocket)
Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (MSI)
Power Supply
Corsair CX600M
Storage
119GB SanDisk SDSSDH2128G ATA Device (SSD)
223GB KINGSTON SV300S37A240G ATA Device (SSD)

I used to always get advice at a local PC store. They offered me the following for 650€:

Mobo
ASUS M5A99X EVO - ATX - Socket AM3+ - AMD 990X
CPU
AMD FX X8 8370E 16MB 4.3GHz 95W BOX Socket AM3+
RAM
RAM 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL11 DIMM (Kit of 2)

Now I did some digging into the motherboard and CPU they suggested and after reading a number of reviews I got the feeling that I should be able to get better parts with my budget. The store in question is however sticking with the above mentioned parts. From what I read the AMD 8370E isn't able to draw out much of the GTX 970 power.

So what do you guys think? Are they ripping me off and what should I be looking at instead?

Solution
Can go something like the Hyper 212 EVO or the Cryorig H7, both are reasonable (about $30-35 in US) and will be fine, I've used both on my 4770Ks and the 6600K
Your current rig will game better than the 8370 suggested 😉 I've got an 8370 rig, and for gaming purposes my old (now sold) 2500K was better, as was 3570K rig. Ifr upgrading, stick with Intel and go with a 4690K, something like the Asus Z97-A mobo and 2x8GB of 1866 or 2133 DRAM - something like the GSkill Ripjaws X or Snipers

Hurray for checking getting a 2nd opinion before blindly accepting offers 😀

Looking at the parts you recommended it seems I would be done at around 500€ so I have some room to play with. I read up on the 4690k and it seems to be a solid CPU that can currently handle pretty much everything on ultra specs. However seeing as I have some room in my budget I'm wondering if I should look into a CPU that has hyperthreading included.

Looking at such a build I would come at:

I5 6600k: 250€
Asus Z170-A: 155€
F4-2666C15D-16GRR: 105€

So at around 510€ still well within budget. The 4790K would cost me around 350€ which would put me at around 600€. I do have a feeling I would need to invest in some hydro cooling if I'd for the 4790K. Is there a big difference in performance between the 6600 and the 4790?
