I wanted to clone the existing hard drive to an SSD but when connecting the SSD with a Kingston external hard drive enclosure the laptop does not see the external drive at all. Even when I swap the drives the laptop does not see the external device. Oddly it does see my USB thumb drive and will boot from it as well.

Yes, I tried the original because I swapped out the SSD first and then attempted to clone the drive. I have used this external enclosure several times. I swapped the SSD back out and put it in the external enclosure and still it is not recognized. I then used another external enclosure and no change. I finally was able to access HPs site so I have downloaded a newer firmware ofr the laptop. I will know tomorrow if that was the issue.

Hi there oostroma,

Have you ever used external HDD on the laptop before? After different enclosures don't get recognized, then it is possible that the USB ports don't supply enough power. I would advise you to change the port as well as the cable(Y type of one preferably).

Hope this will help,
