hi

i'm trying to upgrade my geforce III ti550 to a geforce 6600gt
my motherboard is compadible and everything is as it should be....

...except i found out my 300W power supply isn't going to cut it

i was looking on newegg and these two look to be promising

which of the two (or some other ps) should i get? I'm trying to stay below 30 bucks, because the university doesn't pay its grad students for beans 😉

Thermaltake TR2 W0070 430W Power Supply - Retail

This one looks like it should be good enough
at +15V it delivers 18A... i think the 6600GT needs at least 17A
I've never heard of this brand, and i've been reading brand is important, but I've read some reviews and they all say it is pretty good

POWMAX Demon PSDE580 580W Power Supply - Retail

this one looks badass
it's got 580W, 24A to the +12V, and a sweet, sweet red glow
however, i've been less than convinced since i've heard alot of other people saying it fries itself after like 3 months or so
I figured you guys know more about particular brands, so i figured i'd ask here first

which looks best? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

My local dealer sells PowMax. When they blow, they take out the motherboard with them around half the time. He loves the stuff, tells people their system suffered a "lightening strike" and writes them up a huge bill.

I have an XFX 6600GT and run the Thermaltake TR2 430W PSU. I have had it for 6 months and had no problems with it. It powers my card with no problems. I run a 3.03 ghz Pentium4 CPU, 1 HDD, 1 optical drive, and 1GB of dual channel PC3200 RAM. I would go with the Thermaltake if you want a cheap, reliable PSU that will run a midrange system. There just isn't much of an upgradability path as far as CPUs go.
