6600K is at 90-100% while playing games

First off my build is:
i5-6600k (is not OC)
z170 ASUS pro gaming
16GB 2x8GB corsair
gtx1080ti Auros
rm750i 80+gold powersupply

Whenever I play my games my CPU usage is well above 85% and this is tracked from the task manager. while the apps on the background are mostly only using 0.1% and apps such as discord and steam uses 5% max.

Is this due to the CPU bottlenecking my 1080ti ? or could my monitor im playing on could be an issue since its a 1440p Screen.

I might change my mobo and CPU if the CPU is the main issue of my setup.

Solution
Yeah z390 probably for ease of upgrading 9th gen in future. Or a high quality z370 and bios update to take 9th gen.

You're better with an 8700k or 9900k, no inbetween. Noctua d14 or 15.

My monitor is an MG278Q which is an IPS 144Hz 4ms and 1440p screen I think that is the main problem for my constant fps drops and also because of the 100% load.

Ok yeah, it would benefit you going an i7 but lets try something that might get you bit better play experience with your current cpu. Are you getting any stutters btw when cpu is at 100%?

Firstly i'll show you this vid so you can understand where im coming from.

And this person i helped previously (different hardware but similar problem), he lowered the refresh rate actually to lower cpu usage. He has a 6 core cpu though i know. The primary core of any cpu is important despite games being multi threaded these days. Without HT even 8600k/9600k and 9700k's are showing high cpu usages at high refresh rates/ high fps. The cpu needs to pre-render frames first before handing over to the graphics card, so the more demanding the graphics card is the more work the cpu needs to do and HT can help that primary core. If primary core reaches 100% it'll bring down the rest no matter how many cores there are.

Games do have a lot to do with optimisation too as you'd be aware but I think theres more to it than that regarding frame rates.

Ok, based on what you said I tried something before using the fps limiter you sent me. I dropped the refresh rate from 165 to 99.95 but brought the resolution back to 2160x1440 and BAAAAAAM it's a LOT better! Like it hovers around 60% which I'm fine with.

If you'd like to try the other way and leave your refresh rate (Hz) as is then try Nvidia Inspector or Afterburner to limit your fps to a level that isn't increasing cpu usage so much.

See how you go.

Are you saying that i should not get the 9600 and 9700 ? bcus i was actually thinking of getting the 9700k since its a newer CPU

See the links i posted and read other people's experiences. Search 9700k high cpu usages. Get a cpu with Hyperthreading is all im saying, you'll be grateful you did.

And see that video.

8600k/9600k are nearly identical, 9700k is a little netter. What happens in that video will be the same for 9700k. 8700k doesn't get as high cpu usage and neither will 9900k.

But from what I read the temps under load is better on the 9th Gen
oh and also do you think its a good idea to overclock my CPU ? the current load after the game config i did dropped by around 5% which is far better bcus i have not experience any drops in my fps for the past 1.5 hours

Overclocking will help but only so far. Lowering refresh and fps will have more an affect.

You should see that video through and search what i suggested. I feel you haven't yet because of the kind of questions you're asking.

Tim used on 9th gen is better but can still cool 8th gen properly with a good cooler.

What im getting from you is get a 8700k and maybe z390 or z370 and then switch my hyper 212 to (im thinking) noctua 14 ?
