Do you game at 60 fps, or 100+? Aiming for super high fps is the only time I've noticed an i7 really shine compared to an i5, and only in some games.
Well I have a 1440p monitor @165hz so normally I'm above 100fps
Did you ever upgrade? I'm curious because I'm currently running i5-6600k @ 4.6 ghz on 1440p @ 165hz with Asus ROG Strix OC 1070s in SLI and I can rock +100 fps on pretty much all titles on ultra. I think the i5-6600k is the gaming beast - well now it's the i5-7600k - but you know what I mean. For gaming, these top end i5s are monsters. I've even tested my i5 6600k by gaming, streaming, and recording on Twitch. It maxed itself out, but it still held it down. IDK. Is the upgrade worth it?
Probably not. There's only a couple of titles that benefit from the hyper threading. The i7 may reach a little higher core clock, that should, at least in theory, help with game performance in all situations. However, the difference between 6600k and 7700k is so small I wouldn't go for it. 6600k does not bottleneck your 1080 or 1070 in sli. If you want an i7 just buy one when you're going to upgrade next time, but from 6th gen to 7th is not really worth it. You should wait for at least the 10nm Cannonlake.
