670 -> 980Ti cooling

Everything else aside, I'm currently running a GTX670 in a fractal design node 304. The node 304 has a rather large mesh plate right directly over the fans on the video card.

I'm thinking of dropping some change into a 980Ti and I keep reading about making sure the airflow in the case is good. Well, with a mesh window directly over the fan intake, isn't the "case airflow" mostly a moot subject? I'm using an H55 or something for i7 cpu cooling (2x 120mm fans in tandem), and 2x optional 60mm fans in the front of the case to draw air into the case. I have the front fans turned off, trying to minimize noise. It's pretty quiet, and runs cool.

I checked temps yesterday and cpu/gpu running in the low 30's (C) - at idle.

So the question would be ... without ever experiencing any heat issues and observing good cooling performance with my current setup, should I expect to have cooling issues with a 980Ti in a SFF case? (Specifically the Fractal Design node 304).

I would say a 980 ti would likly run cooler than a 670 or about the same in terms of heat output. If your 670 stays cool under load in that case a 980 ti should as well. Kind of a strange time to get a 980 ti however, pascel is around the corner.

I would think you would do better with a 1080 over a 980Ti. It should also run cooler and use less power in the long run.

i would also say you shouldnt have any problems. it should probably be as cool or cooler since maxwell is so energy efficient. but unless you're getting a good deal on the 980ti (id say less than $400) i would just wait a bit longer for a gtx 1080.

I would go for a blower version of the 980 ti, that has the rear exhaust (reference edition).

I appreciate your suggestions - and you know what? I had been running on the impression that the 1080's would be released at a ridiculous price point. After 10 minutes and a box of google, I see that's not the case. On the other hand, I'm used to dropping ~$330 on "good enough" cards, so taking a leap to $650 is hard to swallow.

I suppose waiting another month or two isn't going to kill me.

hey waiting another month or two will only save you a few bucks in the process. the 980ti should be coming down in price until theyre sold out.
