6700 is overheating

My cpu has idle temps of 35-50 degrees Celsius, but can jump up to 60-80 when I launch certain programs. Skyrim and CS: GO is keeping it at 70-90 degrees. I used prime95 and I was hitting 93-95 degrees. I haven't tried remounting the the cpu cooler yet.

i7 6700k
Cryorig H7
asus Z170-A

Usually when someone has a good cooler and the temps @ stock are bad it was a poor application of thermal paste.

Reapply your paste and remount your cooler. Watch a couple youtube videos if you need some instruction on the proper way to do it.

The H7 should easily cool the 6700. Try cleaning off the old paste and reapply.

And while you are there, check that you removed the protective film from the heatsink. Felt kind of stoopid when i forgot to do that with one of my builds.

He probably have much worse temps than that if the film was on. I remember someone who did that and ruined their CPU in the process.

I feel bad that I laughed really hard about it.


Also make sure you cooler is firmly secured. Sometimes a bolt isn't tightened all the way or a push pin isn't pressed all the way in.

Also check if your fans are pushing again each other. make sure your H7 fan is plugged into the CPU fan header and not a system fan header.

I had to take out my mother board to remount my cooler(caused some problems, but I fixed them), but it was definitely too loose. I'm getting 40 Celsius in Skyrim now.

Glad you got it straightened out. I have done that with those janky push pin coolers a time or two.
