6700k in late 2018?

So I just got a BRAND NEW in the box 6700k for $220. Given that it’s a little over 2 years old, is this still a good buy?

I wasn’t really wanting to upgrade to Kaby Lake, from a 6600k. I figured at that price, getting into a more recent i7 wasn’t bad.

Thoughts?

Depends on what you do with it. For gaming, its still a pretty good chip. For productivity, might not be the best, but not a slouch either.
Overall still good if you already have the rest of the platform(mobo/ram).
Well I mean I have a 6600k on a MSI z170a pro. It’s good, but since I started gaming in 1440p I’ve noticed the cpu usage is going up. It’s currently paired with a MSI gtx 1080ti gaming x.
I think the extra horsepower will significantly extend the life of my rig. But I figured for $220 for a brand new chip, it wasn’t a bad buy.

At the same clocks it's the same CPU as the 7700K. You'd just have to be super lucky to get more than 4.6GHz out of the 6700K while the 7700K hits 5GHz pretty easy. For gaming there isn't a huge difference between the 6700K, 7700K, and 8700K. And there won't be a big difference to the 9700K either. The truth is that 4 cores and 8 threads is plenty for gaming. Now how long that will remain true I'm not sure but for now it's true.

Its a good buy with the existing platform. You should be fine.

No that was a good score, the 6700K is still a pretty competent CPU. One of my rigs still uses one.
