The thought has crossed my mind to upgrade my GPU from a EVGA 680 classified card with the new EVGA 980 classified. Is the new card much of an upgrade from the old one?

I play at 1080p resolutions on max settings. I absolutely hate stuttering, lagging, skipping, of any kind what so ever.

I mainly play CS:GO, 7 days to die, GTA 5, Far Cry 4, MechWarrior Online.

Specs: i7-3770k @ 4.5ghz- CPU
Asus Sabertooth z77 - MOBO
32gbs @ 2133mhz Patriot Viper - DDR3
1000w Seasonic - PSU
840 pro 256GB OS SSD
850 pro 512 GB Game SSD

With the current 680 Classified, I see temps in the mid 60's while maxing out all 1080p graphics on the above titles. Sadly though the fps are dropping with each new game.
GTA 5 is hovering around 40-60fps maxed out.
Far Cry 30-55fps Nearly Maxed.
7 days to die 25-75fps Nearly maxed

I want steady 60+ fps on the most demanding games with no dip, lag, stutter, etc. Will the new 980 Classified work for me?

To correct the confusion My monitor is 1080p at 144hz. The 970 is the worst possible advice Dunlop :p lol. My friend has two of them and he barely out performs my single 680 classified. Those cards are junk and the fools that bought them all regret it. Sad really.

Ak47 How is the 980 Ti far superior to the classified? A little more information would be helpful. The money is meaningless to me as I have more then I can spend.

If your friend has two 970s and they barely out perform your 680 then he doesn't have them set up properly, a single 970 will out perform a 680 by quite a bit. And the pretty much all outstanding reviews for the 970 by hundreds of thousands of owners will show that the card is not "junk".

The 680 classified is a beast compared to the stock 680. Two different animals.

The 970 outperforms the 680 classified on paper and bench tests. but real world side by side performance while playing the games above, They BARELY outperform my 680 classified. They did out preform it though.

the gtx970 is probably a better match for 1080p / 60hz. if you had a 144hz monitor or were playing on 1440p the 980 might make a little more sense. Its hard to justify all the extra $$ you'd spend on a 980 over a 970 if you're gaming on a 1080p 60hz monitor.

and the 970 is about 50% more card then your 680 classified. If your friend's 970 is barely outperforming your 680, that's probably because he has a poor CPU, is gaming off a hard drive, OR is gaming on a 1080p monitor limited to 60hz. In which case he barely looks better because the 680 already will max most games in 1080p and 60hz.

Yes, 980ti uses a better gm200 gpu (also found on titan x)and has 6 gb of vram. You are looking at about 25% better performance out of 980ti then 980.

Nope nope and nope. Same rigs. 840pros, i7-3770ks both at 4.5ghz, 32gigs of ram again. We test on games side by side. to see real differences during play. These online tests never paint the correct picture when actually gaming for 2-6 hours.

I should have known I was going to get responses like this on Toms hardware.

Ak47 You were the closest to helping me out and I appreciate that. Ya didn't try to steer me to junk equipment, saying that I didn't need that much. You listened to what I had to say, and adjusted your advice to what I was looking for. Thank you.

All about these test, No real world experience.
