6800 overclocked???????? (AGP)

Not to doubt anyone on this board but someone recently posted that this card:

is about the same as a 6800 GS... since this card is nearly $50.00 dollars cheaper than the AGP 6800 GS and it has more MB's of ram, I would rather get that then a 6800 GS.

You can see my thread in this same area on my system facts, but basically I am upgrading my fx 5200 to a new AGP card.

From what I can tell the 6800 GS is the best bet, since it does have shader model 3, but if this 6800 can do the same thing... its all mine.

Anyone?
 
My understanding is that the 6800 series can all do SM3.0

Id go with this model, and then get hold of a arctic cooling cooler and then clock away to your hearts content.

I couldn't see any reason not to go for it. I think the GS has DDR 3 ram though, so may be quicker clocked.
 
This 6800 is exactly the same as the 6800 GS.

All AGP 6800 GS's are 12-pipe NV40s, unlike the PCI-express part.

So it's the same thing. Get the Asus for $174.

No. The GS is more far powerful. However, you can unlock a 6800 agp to 16 pipes full and get near-6800gt performance.
For the money though, the GS blows the 6800 away.
 
guess im the only 1 to notice that the card only had 128 bit, the gs has 256, gs will be much faster due to that, there are 6800regulars with 128 memory ddr3 and 256bit, thatd be a better deal than the asus, also the 6800 vanilla may be less than 170...
 
Well. I would actually say that the AGP GS is the same chip at the 6800. It just has better/faster memory, but as far as the chip goes, it really is in fact the same.

No, the original 6800's are based on 130nm, the GS's are based on 110nm. Big overclocking difference.
 
Well, this may all be very much beside the point, but your comment was that the GS was much more powerful. It is not. UPDATED/EDITED: The AGP chip is the same as the 6800GT. It is not built on 110nm technology. The PCI-ex is a completely new chip, built on new geometry. The AGP is not, it has just had the pipes reduced and a shader unit disabled, and they possibly can be re-enabled if you get a good one. I have one, and it works fine at 16x6. Again, this is all very much beside the point.

I highly doubt that the GS's of the AGP's are based on the same technology of the 6800gt/ultra, running at 500 mhz core. I couldn't dream of 500 mhz core on this.

Damn, you were right. However, the AGP GS's are clocked at a measly 350 core, same as the 6800gt...but with less pipes =/

The PCI-e 6800 GS is an NV42, It has 12 pipelines, native... no pipelines to unlock. It is it's own GPU and it overclocks like stink. (I think it's 90 nm but I'm not sure)

The AGP 6800 GS are regular, old, leftover NV40/NV41 chips with 4 pipelines disabled. Old 13 micron process.
The 6800 GS in AGP comes 350 Mhz and doesn't overclock much. But, if you're lucky, you can unlock the pipes.

Don't disagree until you do some research, bishes!

An AGP 6800 GT is MUCH better than an AGP 6800 GS.

The GT is better in that it is guaranteed to have 16 pipes and 6 shader units that work. The GS has faster memory and it may be able to be unlocked, but it is no guaranty. I have one, and it works at 16x6. Your mileage may vary.
 
compusa has an x850pro for 179... that could be another option for you, has 12 pipes 256 bit interface... so it will be similar performance... no sm3.0 though, but having it isnt really a problem right now and by the time you upgrade sm3.0 will be more mainstream..
 
That CompUSA card was sold out today shortly after it was posted. 🙁

The best AGP bet is that ASUS on newegg. $175...

6800 GTs are grossly overpriced, even up to $300 used. New 6800 GTs... forgeddaboudit. If you can find 'em, they'll be over $300, more than a friggin 7800 GS.
 
damn, that went fast then lol... well the asus 6800 is a waste, dont recommend he gets it, at 175 you get dated ddr2 memory, that runs hotter and uses more energy, so not much overclocking, u get 512 of it... which is only useful in a few brand new games at max settings, which u wont be seeing with a 6800... also its 128 bit interface... get the appolo 6800 clocked at 350/700 128 mb ddr3, 256 bit interface, that will outperform the asus one due to the 256 bit interface. plus the fact that its 150 and the stock cooler looks pretty decent, maybe itll overclock well.. im saying thats ur best bet for under 170 pricetag, with the exception of the x850 which im told is sold out (what a shame 🙁 ) ... id recommend the 6800gs next, and if u want more power get a pci express mobo and get a 7900gt, anything higher than a 6800gs on agp is a waste and grossly overpriced... but maybe the 7800gs will drop due to the 7900 release (doubt it)

go with the appolo 6800 128mb, i promise ull be much happier over the asus
