6800Gs vs ATI x800XL

in AGP: X800 XL

In PCI-express: X800 XL, unless you're an overclocker.
If you like to overclock, the PCI-express 6800 GS is an overclocking beast.

Also depends on which FPS you're talking about. If Doom3 and Quake is all you play, the 6800 GS is better. But in general, at stock clocks, the X800XL is the better bet.

X800XL is the card I own, and I was thinking the same thing last week.
The XL shines in games like Far Cry,
and running GTA San Andreas with limiter off and High settings is a blast.
I am over thinking about the GS, and the XL is the card for me now.
Good luck in your choice.

X800XL is better card, unless you overclock, then go for 6800GS, but if you don't overclock, X800XL is your card.

i dont think its better! it doesnt even has sm3.0 that mean no soft shadows, hdr, parelax bump mapping and other cool features!

and who doesnt think non soft shadows suck!

ive had a 9600 a x700 and a 6600gt all had 256mb memory and the 6600gt by nvidia won !

everygame could have aa on *even fear

so yeah i reccomend nvidia

It's kinda weird now, prices went up on the X850XT, but if there's a small price difference between X800XL and X850XT, and XT will win anyday.

I was assuming PCI-e. Now I see it's AGP he wants.

AGP, yes X850XT deals have vanished. His price for a X800XL AGP is actually very good right now.

Most AGP 6800GS cards are clocked lower 350/1000. In this case, the X800XL would be the more powerful card in most cases. Even the higher clocked ones such as the EVGA CO, clocked 400/1100, the X800XL would at least match the 6800GS, probably still do better. For those prices, I'd grab the X800XL.

EDIT: These benchies might be of interest to you. If you look, the GF6800 they use is the overclocked Asus V9999 GE, which sports the same specs as the reference NVidia 6800GS AGP (12-pipe 6800 clocked 350/1000). So you can look at the games that matter to you and compare that 6800 (6800GS) to the X800XL and other AGP cards.

Note in COD2, none of these cards can average 30fps with 4XAA/16XAF, even at 10x7 resolution. And without FSAA, the X800XL destroys the 6800(GS) and manages to keep up with the 6800U.

Problem is, read reviews like Anands and even the new 7800GS is too weak for taking advantage of HDR and soft shadows without being reduced to low resolutions. I know my BFG 6800U OC is not powerful enough to allow these SM3 eye treats to be used without playing at low resolutions. And low res without FSAA isn't worth it IMO. Others here have said the exact same thing about their 6800U's.

That's because you are comparing cards in completely different leagues. 9600, X700, and 6600GT...LOL get real. How does a vanilla 6800 compare to a X800XTpe? Oh wait, it has SM3, so it wins right?

OK, slight to gigantic exageration here. Unless you play at 800x600 with medium to low details. I suppose you play with FSAA, HDR, and Soft shadows right?

Take a look here, and you will see that a 6600GT AVERAGED 15 fps at just 1024x768 when using 4Xaa/16Xaf. If you are playing FEAR with FSAA on a 6600GT, you are making huge sacrifices somewhere else in detail levels and/or resolution. Either that or you like to play slideshows.

Another example: [H]ardOCP found that in FEAR, even the overclocked BFG 7800GS was reduced to 800x600 2X/4X to remain playable with FSAA/AF. Don't take my word for it, check out the link. Yet somehow your 6600GT magically is able to do better?

WTF does that have to do with the 6800 GS and X800 XL?

Do you want to wear a brand flag, or get the best gaming card for the money?

If you want the best card for the money in PCI-e for slightly over $200, then Paul has hit the nail on the head with the X850 XT.

The 6800gs looks about as fast as the x800xl here... so it would depend on how far you can overclock. :?

Where did you find an X800XL AGP for $209.00? Most I've seen are running about $300.00 for AGP. You can find PCI X for about $200.00. Are you sure the one you found is AGP?

If you only wanna spend about $200.00 for an AGP then the 6800GS might be your best bet.
