Ignorant here..., but, how do you get
the finned heat sink to separate from
the cpu so you can put on a fan instead?
This heat sink is so big it won't take
a fan onto it, I would have to remove
entirely this heat sink, and then add
a complete fan/heatsink combo (like from
Fry's or something). But this finned
heatsink seems to be really stuck on snug
and tight - just pry real hard and crack
it off? What?

No fan. I bought this off ebay, and it has a large finned
heatsink really glued on tight. I don't see how a fan
could fit anywhere on it. I see from these posts that
I probably need to get a cpu fan installed somehow.
I had been running it open (no cover on case) for
a couple of months, and I just yesterday put everything
together and closed off the case and then I noticed
the temperature - now I see I need to open the case
again and do something about a cpu fan - maybe
I'll just give up and keep the bloomin' case open
all the time - it always seems like there's one thing
or another that makes have top get into the inards.

NOW I SEE IT!
The fins are just far enough apart so that the little
screws that hold the cpu fan onto it become self-threading
screws, cutting little threads into the sides of the
fins as you screw it in. It holds pretty good.
This is a clever idea, and I kinda feel dunce-like
that I hadn't noticed this already.
I just hope I haven't damaged this cpu (????)
So what is considered the max "safe" temperature
before I should start worrying?

Check this:
I am running a Celeron 466 MHz with an intel fan and NO case fan(at least for now) and with the case a cramped closed space the tempreature has never gone beyond 44 degrees on a very hot summer day!The average is well below that number : About 36 degrees celsius.I overclocked the thing to 546 MHz and it never got beyond 39 under heavy load (didn't test it at summer time though).
I really think 68 is much too much too high;If you ever changed to an Athlon don't even try without a fan or You'd burned 50 of them till now!
