just wondering if the x90 series ever go on sale for future SLI? Or Nvidia only makes limited supply that they always stay at $1K, like the 590? Is it smarter just to get 680 since they do go on sale in the future?

That is very likely, but only until Nvidia responds with their own GTX7xx series. That should not be too long either.

Exactly what I'm planning to do.
I just build my new computer but I'm hanging on integrated graphics until the prices go down.
