6950 crossfire

I currently own the xfs radeon hd 6950 xx edition, im wanting to run the card in sli but I need to know if the card has to be exact.

Yes the cards have to be 2 of the same card to run Crossfire (SLI in Nvidia's case)

just make sure it has the same amount of vram, there are 1gig and 2gig versions of 6950 available...

Actually you only need two of the same series of cards when talking about crossfire, it's NVidia that you do need the exact same chip. For both though any card will be fine with that chip. So since you have a 6950 you could also chose to CF with a 6970 since their the same series (first two numbers).

well yeah that's true, but it is safe to assume a 6970 would be more expensive and basically the extra potential of the card is wasted, it won't perform any better than a 6950 would when crossfired wiht a 6950.

Any of these cards would be good. You have to decide if you want to pay the premium to get the same model or not and if it's okay to get it used or new.

Third option would be the best.

I don't know of any other places to look over seas so if you could list a store you prefer that would be helpful. Mainly you want it to have good cooling since one card will be sitting behind the other and will get significantly hotter since it's sucking in the hot air that the first card is expelling.

What PSU do you have? I hope it's a good model that would be able to even run this.

yeah, definitely get a 2 gig model if you can.
crossfired 6950s would have enough graphics power to really take advantage of 2 gigs of vram.
If you get a 1g card the crossfire setup will only be able to use 1gb total...

i say dont bother with a crossfire setup. it might not be worth the hassle. sell your 6950 for as much as you can and get a 7950 instead. its much better that way

No skip the 7950 and get 7970 if you're upgrading.

totally agree with this. Sell current card and get a better single card. crossfire gives more fps but more headaches getting things to work, and choppier gameplay.
