Thanks for your response. I had already checked out all the previous threads on this topic but they were all from a couple years ago and had suggested that the 970m wasn’t able to utilize anything above 3gb’s anyway.

It depends on the resolution. At 1080p, more than 3GB won't be of much use. At higher resolutions, extra VRAM will be useful.
Just wondering because I just bought a used cyberpower laptop with a i7 6820hk, gtx 970m 6gb and 8gb of ddr4 2133mhz ram. Unfortunately it has a 1080p display.

It is just excess. Won't hurt performance, won't improve it either. Be happy that you have it!
