its been a while since my last build and I'm eyeing the 29" 2560x1080 monitors. I see the new i5's will power 4k resolution with out discrete cards. Would I be able to even run the super wide screen 21:9 monitor without a discrete card? I'll get one later. I'm looking to build around cyber monday when newegg runs their sales. those big @$$ 34" plus the $600 gpu to run are a little too steep for me right now with a full on new build plus monitor costs. I also see that the i5 6400 is about $80 than the unlocked 6600k. would it be better to use that towards a better GPU?

I would say if your eyeing 4k gaming in the future you would probably be much better off with the 6600k, but obviously the best choice is the 6700k, still I think you'd do well with the 6600k though. and I think you at least need a Gtx 970m
There's no way you'd be rolling 4k gaming on standard chip graphics. even if they boast it or not it wouldn't be a quality experience. I'm pretty sure somewhere on cybermonder you'd be able to get a 970m for a fair price as well.

970M??? I'm assuming you mean a desktop 970 right?

the integrated graphics on the 6600K and non-K models, as well as the 6700K are exactly the same. the 6400 is slightly inferior, but not by enough to make any difference in this case. and they are all able to support 2560x1080 resolution, and so is HDMI 1.4

Hello,

HDMI 2.0 added support for 21:9 aspect ratio. Next big update for the HDMI spec which is HDMI 2.0a, is going to be HDR support for the new 4k blu-ray players. HDMI is unique and is primarily for AV/home electronics, with support for frame packing for instance, which DisplayPort simply can't do. I believe that you're just looking at the bandwidth and pixel clock which doesn't tell the whole story. HDMI 1.4 is well within spec if you look at it that way, but it doesn't support the 21:9 aspect ratio. This is key for OP's question.

All the best!

nope. my monitor is 21:9 and runs just fine on my motherboard's hdmi port. pretty sure my motherboard doesn't have hdmi 2.0 (pretty sure NO motherboard does). last i checked, the only mainstream video devices that actually have hdmi 2.0 is gtx 900 series, and 4k displays.

its an area i pay close attention to since i am planning to build an HTPC to support 4K60Hz to an HDTV (which needs an HDMI 2.0 interface).

That's odd. Why would they announce "Support for 21:9" during the HDMI 2.0 launch. I stand corrected. Why would they not make things like these clear. 😡

You will need HDMI 2.0a spec if you want HDR for external devices. Now some current TV's will just get updated, but not all of them. I'm too looking at 4k options for this Christmas. Just a tip I guess, because the official HDMI spec can be wrong too, wouldn't surprise me if I'm wrong on this one as well. ;-)

good to know, but i dont want to hijack this thread any more than i already have.

to OP: yes, the integrated graphics of any skylake (or haswell) will handle the 2560x1080 resolution. i wouldn't expect to do any gaming, but general use you will be fine. as for the size of the screen - 29" has the same height as a 24" 16:9 and 34" has the same height as 27" 16:9. the 34" displays do come in 2560x1080 (such as the one i have LG 34UM64-P and i got mine for $400 on sale) as well. the ultra wide screen is incredible for movies and games, but general use i sometimes find i have to turn my head a bit more than i'd like. even still, i strongly recommend it.

as for the CPU, i would suggest getting the K version CPU (especially if you wait til Black Friday/Cyber Monday when you'll likely get a killer combo deal), simply because it's worth it to shell out a bit more cash now and not have to worry about an upgrade for a while.

I did some looking at some mobo's and saw an ASRock Z170M board that says under display: "Supports DisplayPort 1.2 with max. resolution up to 4K x 2K (4096x2304) @ 24Hz or 4K x 2K (3840x2160) @ 60Hz and Supports HDMI with max. resolution up to 4K x 2K (4096x2304) @ 24Hz"

I'm not set on this board or anything. I think going the 21:9 is a little better than going 16:9 4K because I get a little length with out having to run 2 monitors plus the cards with them. I have (2) Acer g235h" widescreens that I use at church and like those, except they are dvi and vga. i don't upgrade monitors often. I'm kind of going backwards and building to monitor. the most I want to spend is $450 to last me a very long time.

this is kind of how I've allocated my budget for this build so far:
$270 - I5 6600k
$150 - z170 Mobo
$100 - 16 GB ddr4 ram
$300 - GPU
$400 - monitor (leaning towards 34" 21:9 2560 x 1080)
$ 75 - PSU
$ 75 - Case
$ 20 - CD drive
$1370 total

I'm keeping my hard drive and OS, cd drive went tango uniform awhile back. nothing from my current computer is really usable.

Anyone want to fill in the blanks? I'll probably only run the one monitor with Display port too.

So I guess you are saying the Intel Core i5 5200U ( HD 5500 graphic) will support just fine with my LG 25um56 2560 x 1080 60hz via hdmi. Please help me before I make a buying decision. Thank you

Oh here is the system I am looking at. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Fanless-i5-Mini-PC-Windows-Barebone-PC-Broadwell-Intell-Core-i5-5200U-2-7GHz-4K-HTPC/32366202925.html
