Hi all, I'm using an old PC as my HTPC with an nVidia 1050Ti video card going into my AVR. I know the PC doesn't have 7.1 audio, but I do get 7.1 audio when watching a movie. Where does the 7.1 audio come from?

Why doesn't your computer have 7.1, most of the time its standard built in with the motherboard.
My motherboard z97 was released in 2014 and it states clearly - 7.1 CH HD Audio (Realtek ALC1150 Audio Codec), Supports Purity Sound™ 2 & DTS Connect

What are you connecting from the PC to the AVR and does your AVR support 7.1?

my PC is a Lenovo M90p model 5498. Its very old and from work. I doubt it would have 7.1 audio. I can't confirm that though. Does it? Either way, if my PC is connected to my Denon AVR-X3400H 7.1 AVR through the HDMI cable plugged into the 1050Ti video card, does the audio still go from the onboard audio to the video card and out through the HDMI cable into my AVR?

I know, but where is the audio coming from when watching a movie on your computer if your HDMI cable is plugged into your video card? does the onboard audio send the sound to the video card?
