7.1 Virtual Surround OR Stereo?

So i have had a pair of Wireless Logitech G930's (headset) for a while now and they are really broken now.

The 7.1 virtual surround sounded amazing in my opinion on these babies. clear, loud, crisp, and great bass and accurate surround sound. However, Logitech sucks with software, especially wireless software, and these are really unbearable now as they keep disconnecting. I ordered a pair of Arctis 5's but the sound quality was so bad imo that it actually made me mad, so i returned them.

Now i am hearing that Stereo sound is better and virtual 7.1 is a gimmick? is this true? i would have thought surround sound would be best to have as hearing sound in all directions is immersive for RPG games, and advantageous in FPS games. Does stereo sound also give off accurate sound in all directions (seemingly) in headsets? I always thought stereo was just two speakers and sound would always just sound like its all around at all times, even if you heard someone yell to your back right in a video game.

(the arctis 5 stereo and surround both sounded horrible compared to my 7 year old G930's virtual surround)

I find that it depends on the implementation. Although stereo will technically still give you the same range of sounds that you would with virtual surround, it may not sound as nice since virtual surround adds effects to make it feel like more immersive (like echoing).

I would avoid headsets with virtual sound built in and just go for plain old stereo headphones. You can add virtual surround later with a soundcard or just use your motherboards audio options (if it has it). It's much easier to compare this way but that's just my opinion.

I haven't tried the G930's but I have tried the Arctis 3's (same drivers as 5) and Hyperx Cloud Core's. If you need some help with choosing another headset, maybe consider giving the HyperX Clouds...

If you need some help with choosing another headset, maybe consider giving the HyperX Clouds (either Core's or I/II) a look. They don't have wireless but they do sound better than the Arctis's. I use a Xonar DG which has Dolby Headphone for virtual surround sound as well.

thanks for the reply. So with stereo sound you can hear a sound to your back right in the headset if the sound is actually coming from your characters back right?
