Hello community,

I would like to upgrade my pc that I built in 2019, as I am limited on graphics and fps. Here is my current configuration :

  • Power supply : EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3, 650W
  • Monitor : AOC Q3279VWF FreeSync
  • CPU : AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (3.2 GHz)
  • Motherboard : Asus PRIME B450M-A
  • GPU : EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 BLACK EDITION, 8 Go
  • Storage : Samsung Série 860 QVO, 1 To, SATA III
  • Memory : DDR4 Corsair Vengeance LPX, Noir, 16 Go, 3000 MHz, CAS 16
  • Case : Cooler Master MasterBox NR400
I think that for the moment, I can get good performance by upgrading only the processor, CPU and maybe memory. What do you think?

Approximate Purchase Date: as soon as possible

Budget Range: €700-800

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, surfing the internet

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: I think the motherboard, processor and some RAM

Do you need to buy OS: No

Location: France/Paris

Overclocking: Don’t know

Multiple GPUs: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 2560x1440p

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: I'm starting to play games like World of Warcraft again and I'm forced to set the graphics to minimum, and even with that, the fps is 50.

This board supports PCIe 5.

Thank you for your feedback. I couldn't tell the difference between the two configurations you provided.

The idea is to upgrade my PC so that it lasts another 4-5 years before the next upgrade. I'd have to upgrade the GPU, but I'd rather do it later, as I've seen that prices are expensive at the moment.

I have a friend who recommended this configuration https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/8Fgtt7 :

You want DDR5-6000 CL30 seeing how games benefit from low latency RAM.

Okay, I see.

I'm afraid that in the configuration you've given me, a CPU cooler is too big for the case.
Is it mandatory to have a CPU cooler?
You want an aftermarket cooler for that cpu. Here's an example of a cooler that should fit that case.

So if I understand correctly, the new processors need a cpu cooler and this has become mandatory.

So I could take the configuration you gave me with the CPU Cooler: *Deepcool AG620 67.88 CFM CPU Cooler

Stock cooler for the 7700 should be enough for gaming, but it would never be like a good 1 tower, or even better 2 tower aftermarket cooler.
Now, for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D theres no cooler included, so you will have to buy an aftermarket one.

Then again, that is indeed a good first step to build a gaming PC for the next 4 to 5 years... but, if you plan to play heavier/newer games, then you will need to eventually change the RTX 2070 for something stronger (I know the feeling, I had that card till not soo long ago). And you also want a GPU with at least 12GB of VRAM, preferably 16GB.
By that time you may also consider getting a newer PSU, from a well known quality brand, and most likely with at least 750~850 watts, depending on the GPU replacement you pick.

Cheers!

I must admit, I haven't yet decided which processor to get, to be honest.

I've already understood that I'll have to change my motherboard (either https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/product...plus-atx-am5-motherboard-tuf-gaming-b650-plus or MSI PRO B850-P WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard )

And for memory DDR5-6000 CL30 : G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory

As for the graphics card, I suspect I'll have to change it, but I find that graphics cards are expensive at the moment (500-700€ minimum).

I'm already thinking of changing the processor, motherboard and memory, and maybe at the end of the year, changing the graphics card + power supply.

Sounds alright.

Yes, sadly GPU prices have gone to the roof. Every now and then you may get a decent deal, but you have to pay a lot of attention and stay behind it all the time.

You could go with the Ryzen 5600 / 5700 / 5700X3D / 5800X3D and save your self from changing the mobo and RAM (you will need to update your BIOS), but you will be limited to the PCI-E v3.0 slot that your current mobo have, it shouldn't be a huge deal for most newer GPUs, since PCI-E versions should always be backwad compatible (at least by the time been).
Then again, depending on the stock, those "old" X3D model may cost the same or higher than the new 7000 series.

I think I'll go with this configuration (it's a bit out of my budget but I'll try to see if I can't save money on certain sites) :

CPU : AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/product...0x3d-42-ghz-8-core-processor-100-100000910wof

CPU Cooler : Deepcool AG620 Deepcool AG620 67.88 CFM CPU Cooler

Then I'll keep an eye on the price of GPU.

By the way, what do you mean that I'll have to update my BIOS?

That looks great.

About the BIOS: as I wrote, only in the case you would go with the most budget option: changing your CPU for one of the the 5000 serires, then you would need to update your current mobo BIOS. Otherwise it would not recognize this new 5000 series cpus.

If you go with a Ryzen 7000 series you shouldn't need to update the BIOS, since your new motherboard should be compatible out of the box.

The reasons we do BIOS updates every now andthen is to fix particular issues, get more RAM compatibility, improved power/performance ratios, etc.
