720p Gaming on a 1440p Monitor

Hi, I am looking to buy a new 1440p monitor, mainly for work but I want to occasionally play a game or two. Since I already have a GTX 960 and I don't plan to upgrade it for at least a year, I suppose I'll be forced to game at 720p. So I'd like to ask whether 720p will look terrible or not on a 1440p display. I've heard and read a lot about interpolation and how terrible it can be, but I want to hear from someone who has tried this specific configuration. Thanks in advance for the help.

Solution
Well i only tested it for a couple of minutes just to see the quality difference, was curious in how 720p looked, but 1080p seemed much sharper then 720p did.
Much like 1080p and 4k, 1440p is exactly 4x the pixels of 720p (assuming both are 16:9), so no interpolation is needed.

My monitor is 1440p but 27", i tried 720p and even with higher graphics settings it didn't look that great, would much rather lower the settings and play at 1080p.

Yes, but using the 1080p resolution on a 1440p monitor, won't use too much interpolation thus making everything look blurry?
