720p Laptop display with a 1080p monitor.

Hi--I am looking to purchase a laptop that is 720p and uses an HD 4600 graphics card. I'm looking to clone the display to an external monitor in 1080p. It is important that this will display in 1080p on the monitor without any issues.

Is this possible? Thanks in advance!

Make sure it has HDMI. I have never tried it, but after discussing it with other technicians, the general consensus is that it should work. I think you should just get a laptop that supports 1080p anyway. Generally, they're not much more money if any.

Cloning isn't possible to keep 1080p on the external monitor, but extending is. When you clone, both displays have to have the same resolution and it'll usually default to the lower resolution if there is a mismatch. In your case, the 1080p monitor will display in 720p.

If you use the Extend function, you can have your 720p laptop monitor and have it output to the external monitor at 1080p.

Gotcha--I agree that the upgrade to 1080p is the safer route, but for the laptop I'm looking for, the build time will increase by 2 weeks if I request 1080p (ordering off the Lenovo site for a z510 laptop).

But I think it is safer to go this route instead of taking the risk of 720p. The 2nd display is a 42inch touch screen TV, so I would rather not take the risk of having this show up in 720p or have any issues

Hmm, this could definitely work. Would this have any performance effect on the laptop? I'm trying to run some video software to be displayed on a 42inch monitor. If this would show up in 1080p without any issues if I extend the desktop, then this could be a good option.

Intel HD graphics typically have low video memory. I think it'd have a pretty decent impact on your speed.
