750 dollar new build (Looking for input)

Yes I know there is no point in getting a (k) CPU without overclocking it. However there are 2 reasons for this.
1. My friend plans to overclock when he needs to.
2. Purchasing the i7 3770k and the i5 3570k gets 40$ off motherboard grouped with the 20$ MIR makes for a sweet CPU/Mobo for 220$ combination. If you have a better deal for that please let me know but keep that in mind

Goal of the computer:
Run Skyrim at High (unlikely Ultra settings), Borderlands 2 High settings, and League of Legends. Also being used as a school work computer.

The question should be - are you really going to overclock or not? If you are serious then stick with the 3570K. If you're not or on the fence you should get a 3470 and H77 motherboard. Then upgrade your GPU to the 7870 or 7950. Otherwise that looks good.

Unfortunately that really isn't the question.

The cheapest i5 3470 is from MicroCenter for 149.99 (20$ less then the i5 3750k)
The cheapest h77 that I can see is also from MicroCenter Biostar H77MU3 LGA 1155 for 69.99 (10$ MIR) = 59.99. (10 dollars more then the Gigabyte Z77)

This means your suggestion saves 10$ for a worse Mobo/cpu combination
Additionally 10$ wont be the make/break for a GPU (unless I am mistaken) Wouldn't be the first time, nor the last.


As for if he really plans to Overclock it - I am not sure it is for a friend not myself.

It's definitely not a "worse mobo/CPU combo". Biostar isn't the best motherboard manufacturer, I'll give you that. If you look at benchmarks closely - there's zero difference between 3.2 and 3.4 GHz. What makes the 3570K worth purchasing is the unlocked multiplier. If you want to use it that's what it is there for and you get the ability to overclock. They're pretty much the exact same chip set - Z77 gives you the ability to overclock. H77 doesn't.

Not necessarily - it all depends on what you want to get out of your PC. Micro Center isn't the only place to buy a PC - it's just the cheapest.

I understand your argument

However there is three problems that I see.

1. Your i5 3470 and Mobo actually cost MORE.

2. You increased the Video card by sacrificing the Operating system... not really a trade my friend wants to make (nor any user)

3. You say the 3.4 to 3.2 ghz doesn't make a real-world difference. However if I am able to pay LESS to get 3.4 ghz why wouldn't i ?
