I can't do an intel build, but I would have liked to since it exceeded my budget of $750. (Probably i5 or i7, maybe used?) There is a combo at microcenter that takes of $80 of the build (for cpu and mobo), leving me with $756. Is this a good build? (I have an ssd at home)

I'd like to see some data to backup such a serious claim. Last time I check, the 970 GTX has more VRAM than a 280x and and performs on the same level as a 290x even in high VRAM/stressful situations.

I'll say it again, you're going to have to provide data to backup your claim. There was a big fuss about the 970 VRAM issues at first. Then people started to realize that it's not a big issue and there were few situations where the 970 GTX had issues. The only people who are still stuck on this are fanboys.

Ah yes, Watchdogs. So Ubisoft's statements about the optimization issues when they released the game don't mean anything? You know, the patch they released in August '14 to address the shuttering and VRAM issue?

The 970 is not going to be a problem. At 1080, it is the best choice. If the OP plays at a higher resolution, he might need a better card but that's a very small chance as even at higher resolutions the 970 GTX is still a solid GPU.
