I've been out of the tech scene too long and my BF is buying me hardware after much cajoling.

It's come down to the NVidia 7600 GS 512MB DDR2 AGP for AU $229
vs.
ATI X1650 PRO 512MB DDR2 AGP for AU $249

I play Civ 4, TS2, Dawn of War, Command and Conquer series, NWN, but no FPS. I'm getting Oblivion for my b'day from my folks with an autographed Xbox 360.

The rest of my PC is pretty average, as the BF is a non geek, and explaining how a 10,000 rpm hdd is better than the 5400 it came with is a little hard, video cards, however, he gets.

So what's more stable, and what'll run better?

Thanks.

Yeah it was fun being the only girl in Tech Bay... got away with murder :D

I know the 7600GT is supposed to be good, but I can only get the GS version.
I have always been an NVidia kinda girl (and an AMD girl) but I know the 6200s had heaps of problems.

NWN2 has not been released in Aus last time I checked EB.

I also saw some threads about 7600GTs crashing due to heating and other errors, I take it this wouldn't happen with the slower GS version.

Thanks!

Sorry I deleted my original post when I realized I mis-read your post. I was thinking 7600GT instead of the 7600GS. But apparently you responded as I was in the process of deleting it.

The benchmarks between the 7600GS and the X1650 is a bit mixed:

Based on the results I would choose the 7600GS since you prefer nVidia. It also consumes less power.

some 7600GTs had heat issues because they were highly overclocked above stock.
