I know it sounds insane, but I have been comparing a lot of the benchmarks and stats. I know the 7800 has 256 bit memory interface, higher fillrate, etc...

However, if you look at: http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/02/vga_charts_viii/index.html

and

http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/03/09/ati_and_nvidias_same_day_mega_launch_mayhem/index.html

You will see:

Black and White 2:

at 1024x768 Max quality no AA or af

7800 gt = 34.4 fps
7600 gt = 32.69 fps

at 1600x1200 max quality max aa

7800 gt = 16.6 fps

7600 gt= 17.21 fps

3dmark 05 :

1600x1200 max quality, 4xaa 8xaf

7800 gt = 4276
7600 gt = 2861

on a side note, the 7900 gt gets only 4480, so maybe the driveres for the new cards in 3dmark 05 are a little messed currently.

The fear benchmarks are useless, because the new cards get poor poor poor fps in the fear benchmark toms did.

Doom 3:

couldnt find any 7800 gt benchmarks on toms for doom3 that would compare, however:

1600x1200 max quality 4x aa 8xaf

6800 ultra 256 mb : 43.5 fps
7600 gt: 38.2 fps
6800 gt: 39.5 fps

1024x768 max quality 4xaa 8xaf

6800 ultra =82.5
6800 gt =74.1
7600 gt =73.8

1024 x768 max quality no aa 8xaf

6800 ultra = 112.6
6800 gt = 104.6
7600 gt = 121.2

So anyways, this isn't even the CO or superclocked versions eVga and probably other people sell as well. I know ist lacking in memory bandwidth and only 128 bit memory interface, but i think it makes up for those things in price$$$, and also in its memory speeds and core speeds

If i missed something critical feel free to point it out

What we really need is a VGA Charts IX so we can compare all these cards :)

7800GT is easily better than the 7600GT. On anything non cpu limited it should be a clean sweep. Take a look at Anand's review starting on the page linked below, and then go on to the other benchies too.

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2717&p=10

By the way,
Make it a habbit not to compare benchmark scores between reviews. Test sytems, drivers, game patches, benchmark parameteres, timedemos used, etc. can all change and drastically impact results. And this is evendent as you look at Anands direct comparison I linked to. The 7600GT is about halfway between a 6800GS and a 7800GT.

The 7600 GT is a great card for the price.

Still, the 7900 GT is vastly superior. But quite frankly other factors come into play - in some cases at certain resolutions games will be CPU limited.

In real-world play the 7900 GT will usually best the 7600 GT easily.

yeah ok, but all those tests are run with 4xaa, which obviously cripples a card with less pixel pipelines and memory bandwidth/interface, no?

im telling you man, without the aa, or even 2x, the gap between them would lessen substantially 😀

Yeah, I know I shouldn't really have compared the 2 charts, however the test sytems are near identical, and the benchmark test the ran are as well, so I thought it might be somewhat accurate. Why can't Anandtech test without 4x aa damnit :? :?

Look at COD2 without FSAA. Only if cpu/system bound should the 7600GT equal the 7800GT.

Basically if we reduce the eye candy enough, then all the mid and high end cards would perform equally. 1024x768 without FSAA or AF is a not a good res/setting to test at as often performance will be cpu/system bound. Only time to put weight into 10x7 no AA/AF is if that is all the cards can do and remain playable. Otherwise upping the resolution and/or bumping up the eye candy is what will show youthe difference between the power of the cards.

Honeslty, the difference between playbale settings with a card like the 7600GT and the 7800GT often might be that FSAA has to be disabled on the 7600GT to remain playable. Or resolution can be lowered and keep FSAA. [H]ardocp does a good job showing just what maximum playable settings each card can manage, showing real world benefit of one over the other. As an example look at this link. Basically the 7900GTX's real world benefit in COD2 amounts to being able to used 2X FSAA where the 7800GTX can not. http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTAwMSwxNCwsaGVudGh1c2lhc3Q=

Boooooo 😛

OK, I yield, HOWEVER..... you have to agree that the difference between the cards is not a huge amount. Also the prices at the store in Vancouver, BC where I shop for my parts www.atic.ca, I can get a 7600 gt evga for $225 CDN and on newegg, they are $229 USD.... the 7900 gt is around $370 CDN at ATIC.

I don't really agree that the difference is small. I wouldn't buy a 7800GT and not care about eye candy. They really aren't comparable cards. But, the 7600GT looks to be a great performing card for the money and considering it's specs. Shoot, it's better than my 16-pipe 256-bit 6800 Ultra with only 40% of the release price.

I would be interested in seeing the difference in performance between a 128 mb 6600GT AGP and this new 7600GT. I can't afford the new $600 cards, but at www.mwave.com they've got the EVGA GEFORCE 7600 GT 256MB for $189.00. That seems like a pretty good deal for the mid-level budget minded gamer.
