7700k vs 7600k (GTX1080) Battlefield

My friend who just upgraded his GPU from the 1050ti to the 1080, doesn't seem too satisfied with the upgrade. While the fps has increased considerably (1920*1080) there are frequent drops in his framerate, he also told me that his frametime tends to jump to 27ms while playing BF1 in full lobbies and CPU hits 99% usage. His CPU is a Core i5 7600k (stock clock), I was wondering if he'd notice any change if he upgraded to an i7 7700k.

Has he updated his graphics driver through GeForce Experience?

BF1 is a very CPU intense game. His CPU just meets the minimum requirements (6600k) for that game. He will see substantial improvement (20%) in BF1 by going with a 7700k over the 7600k as BF1 can really use the extra threads on the i7.

If the motherboard permits overclocking, friend should overclock.
Single thread performance will improve.

A i7-7700K would be an upgrade from two points of view.
1. Adding 4 more threads will be helpful for multiplayer, not so much in single player.
2. The stock clocks on the i7-7700K are higher, but not by much.
Overclocking either is the way to go.

He would, but a 7700k is a bad choice, for the same price he's better off keeping his RAM and buying a either an lga 1151 v3 or AM4 motherboard and an i5 8400 or ryzen 5 2600x. That way he also has an upgrade path for the future, Ryzen and Coffee lake completely made obsolete all of the older mainstream platforms, to the point that unless its an exceptional deal, its not worth it to upgrade them.

Problem is, a 7700K is 29% faster than a 2600X in BF5....

So I'd hardly call a 2600X a 'better' choice, truthfully, although for the (too high) cost of a 7700K, you are clearly in 8600K and new mainboard territory...which actually is faster than both.
