http://www.eteknix.com/4k-gaming-showdown-amd-r9-290x-crossfire-vs-nvidia-gtx-780-ti-sli/ In SLI at stock, the 780 TI beats the r9 290X crossfire by about 9%. The r9 290X would be the best bang for your buck, but you would get slightly better performance, lower power consumption and a cooler/quieter system with the 780 TIs.
What resolution are you gonna play!
i consider 3 way crossfire or 3 way sli overkill plus not the best way!
you take like 20% performance at the 3rd card and it isnt worth it!
Have you consider 2 way titan black?or 2 780ti/290x from evga/tri-x?
By saying all this if you play at high resolutions at 1080 even a 780ti/290x can max out everything!

The 290x in CFX over the 780 SLI easy. The 780 is really overpriced! You can get a 280x for cheaper and they have basically the same specs. So your two 780 SLI is equal to about the performance of two 280x in CFX. Still great, but for the costs you are better off getting the MUCH better GPUS, in this case the 290x.

I would recommend the 780ti's over the AMD cards, they may not be as powerful as the 290x, but for multi-gpu, they have the blower style cooler, which is very important for SLI, with AMD at load the temperatures exceeded 90 degrees on my friend's computer with two cards and that was at 98% usage, the card's also throttled themselves. When he returned them for a pair of 780's, he took a small hit in frame rates, but the cards didn't go past 80. Either way, if you SLI, use the reference cooler, aftermarket coolers aren't optimized for SLI as they exhaust a lot of heat onto the other card. I also wouldn't recommend 3 way SLI for gaming unless you are playing with multi-monitor 4k. I would save the money on the 3rd card and get a nice monitor.

Keeping a CFX, SLI rig cool is more dependent upon your case cooling. I have a two 270x in CFX and I had to get a case with a VGA side panel fan because my old case they literally burnt up along with my 750 watt PSU. Since I upgraded cases, my temps do not go above 84. My case has a 140mm side panel fan. Make sure you have adequate air flow regardless of config.

Either way, why spend the same amount of money for less performance? Go with the 290x CFX FTW! LOL

Am I missing something? 780 Ti SLI performs better in BF 4 than 290x Crossfire from what I can see?

This is exactly what I said at the start, I hope someone listens to you rather than ignoring you like they did to me.

I will second that quote.

Didn't consider the exact model of the r9 290X, this one comes with an excellent cooler that runs at 72C on furmark (Max load), and noise levels very close to the 780 Ti. http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/sapphire-r9-290x-vapor-x-oc-review/

Yet you could settle for 5C-10C cooler with the same cooler on a 780 Ti.

Either way, just buy them according to your needs.
If you don't care for noise and heat constraint, go for the XFire.
If you are sensitive to either, 780Ti's will do just fine.
Price is really of no concern if you seriously have that much money for a 3-SLI/XFire.

Just to reiterate what I said before, if you get the 780ti make sure you use the stock cooler for SLI, most others will just dump heat onto each other making them throttle themselves. This doesn't really apply to amd, because their stock coolers are terrible.

I'm sure some companies make heat dissipation efficient for SLI.
I mean not everyone just buys one of these amazing brand cards.
