Did the game crash? The IC's I work on will operate up to about 150C Beyond that the semiconductor starts to behave like a block of silicon (transistor control overwhelmed by extra carriers). The chip would be harmed at 233 but would probably survive a short time. This assuming a short or extra current wasn't causing the extra heat.

So if the game did not crash, then 233 is a screwed up reading and not real.

Yes the game did crash.

I think what happened though was that the 233 is a dodgy reading and that the onboard thermometer is faulty. The card and software thinks that is the real value though so restarted.

Maybe if i disable the Nvidia option to shut down if it hits a high temp it will stop randomly rebooting.

Works fine with CSS though...

Charts from ATITool are giving you false readings. Nvidia control panel has a 150C shutoff system. If you think its hot, just pop off the side panel and touch the card. If its hot to the touch, then its overheating. If its moderate to cool, then its perfectly fine.

sounds like a glitch to me....

Considering 100C is perfectly fine for chips to run at and that is boiling for water, I don't the "it feels hot" is an accurate enough basis. If you cannot touch the back of the card without causing a lot of pain, ok that could indicate a massive heat problem. However, I would expect the heat sinks to feel rather hot. If they are not too warm, then you probably have poor contact with the GPU. I have seen a card when installed in a tower case, the heat sink had enough mass to pull away from the GPU by gravity alone. Killed the 6800GS pretty quickly during our DOOM 3 debug.

Well ATITool does have support for nVidia cards. As for how that support qualifies? well it shows my fan at 0 RPM's when I can clearly see it running.

That's awesome!
Sure beats my high score.
You sure your case was not reduced to a steaming pile of plastic and silicon?

hehe Thanks! :D

No it wasnt, btw Im using a ThermalTake Tsunami Silver version with side window and I can see everything perfectly, nothing reduced to a steaming pile of anything 8)

I have 2 7800gt co's in sli mode and not once has either of them got above 58 celcius.I would check and make sure the heatsinks are seated properly and then if it still reads that hot,use the nvidia tool as a record to go with.Goodluck.

ATITool misreading a temp still doesnt explain why it restarts though.

Anyone think maybe the sensor on the card is messed up?

Anywho I'm just gonna whack an Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 on it.

if 91.47 works for you then great

i skipped 91.47 and went straight to 93.71 and all is well so havnt looked back. although i still prefer the old nv control panel
