7900 GTX works at 650 MHz

you guys read the article: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=29795

they said it mite have only 24 pipelines

hmm.....

they mite not be able to beat x1900xtx

what do you guys think

Personaly I think the G71 is much like ATI's X1800XT, it won't last long. You all remember how short lived the X1800XT was? Paper launch then hung around for only a month or 2 before the X1900XTX came out.

The G71 sounds more like a test bed for thier 90nm production and so see what the 90nm process can turn out. I would expect to see the next series of nVidia's before summer, at or around the launch of AM2 socket. They may not be timing it that way on purpose but that wouldn't surprise me

This may be the "down" time for nVidia that ATI just experienced.

We'll just have to see what nVidia has brewing in thier kitchen. We can speculate all we want, but it seems like nVidia is like AMD they like to keep things hush hush till they are ready. As of late, they have turned out some amazing stuff.

If the card is at 650Mhz and 24 pipes it will more than likely loose to the x1900xtx or even the x1900xt. Though if it is 32 pipes it would give the cards a good run for their money. We'll just have to wait and see(the hard part).

You know we nerds have no patience.... whats the matter with you lol

Even if it has 32 pipes... thats still 16 less pixel shaders than the x1900xtx.
Considering they run at the same speed, its pretty obvious what's going to happen.

if the 7900 is really 650 core thats really sad
cause b4 i sell my 7800 gtx im going to slap on some watercooling and oc it to about 650 core after voltage modding and do some benchies

You all remember how short lived the X1800XT was?

yeah, i think i can muster up an idea.....considering it was like 3weeks ago

your asking me to remember like it happened 25yrs ago...lol

Well some of us have a VERY short term memory, and by us i mean me lol.

I'm not even 25 yet so remembering that far back would be amazing 8O

Yeah, it'll perform better with a higher pixel fill rate.

yes, you're right.
But what happens when we turn on a game like FEAR,
that's shader intensive?

I think that the 32 pipes will bottleneck... at the pixel shaders.
And all that fill rate will be of no use. 😛

ATi uses 3 pixel shaders per pipe right?
So that means it can perform 3 shader operations per cycle.
Meanwhile nvidia only does one. That means that it has to use 3 clock cycles for the same operation as the ATI card.... You get the point.

It's almost embarrassing to ask such newb questions regarding the 7900's released today, but I have a few basics to which you can roll your eyes. I see that the clock and memory speeds for the new GTX's are a bit more than the 1900XTX's, so is the only real advantage to getting a 7900GTX with the speed, and not with image quality since the 1900's have more pixel shaders? I guess I can sum it up this way: If you could get the 7900GTX or the 1900XTX, what would you do? I'm thinking about getting one of them in the next week or so.

.........OR should I just pick up a GT and wait for the new round of nvidia GPU's to come around?
