hi, i have a real crappy card right now and im kinda lookin for a mid range card. I found the 7900gs ko for 164$ (185 before the rebate) and the 7950GT for 205$. Is it worth getting the 7950gt for 40 more dollars? Also what info would you need to know if my computer can handle it?

I would go with the 7950GT, as many models will have 512mb (some of the new ones have 256) and the 7900GS KO will have 256mb, not to mention the 7950GT has 24 Pixelpipelines compared to the 7900GS KO having 20. Toss in the fact the the 7900GS KO is already overclocked to 500MHz, which is slower then the stock 7950GT (again cant speak for all manufactures but in regards to XFX) and I am sold on the 7950GT.

Im aware that there are 512 version, but even if i buy the 256 MB , it would be a huge upgrade from what i have right now, so i have no problems with the 256 ver. What about the PSU and other requirements? how do i know if i can use this card, if i didnt buy an additional PSU?

processor Intel Pentium D 820
chipset Intel i945P
currently 512 mb DDR2 of ram, hopefully ill be gettin 1 more gig to get 1.5 in total.
mainboard : intel prague

aight.. i just checked and this is my PSU (came with my comp)
http://www.power-on.com/atx12vg300bt.html#spec
conserning the 7950gt, i need:
Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 18 Amp Amps.)

and my PSU's is 300 W, but it says it has 12 Volt current rating of 18 Amp, so.. is this gonna be enough? if not, what would be the effects? do i really need to get a, for example, 500 W?

but it says it has +12V current rating of 18 A. does that even matter? what would happen if i run the 7950gt on my current psu? and what kind of psu would i need to buy?

I would get the 7950GT if i where you. Now about the power supply it sounds like you might be able get a way with that one but i highly recommend getting a better one.

I see. If i keep this PSU, would it damage the vid card at any way? or would it just slow it down. Cuz i may try it in my current PSU and if im not happy with the results i might get a new psu.

I didn't look at your power supply link at first it says you have 2 12v rails each is 18a but must not add up to over 22A together. So basically you have a 22amps on the 12v to work with. You should be fine on with it then as long as you don't have any thing else taking up tons of power. What else is in the system?

Also if you do get that card get a program called everest home and use it to check to make sure the 12v rail does not go below 11.3v. When checking that run ATI tool with 3d fuzzy cube spinning. Run that for an 1 hour to make sure all is good.

I see. this would actually b the 1st thing ill b adding to the computer, along with an Ultra 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz, im not sure about that 1 tho. any ideas? lol. I wanted to get one that needed 2.0 V but i think my system isnt compatible with it. and well, like i said, this is what the computer came with:

processor: Intel Pentium D 820
chipset: Intel i945P
currently 512 mb DDR2 of ram(+ the 1 gig i mentioned)
mainboard : intel prague
radeon x300 128 mb
sound card: SigmaTel Audio

what else do u need?

Thats too bad.. will my PSU damage or just slow down the card? because like i said, any video card upgrade from what i have would be good (x300 radeon 128 mb). and of course in time i would buy another psu to improve the card's performance (this would only be if the psu does not damages the card).

About the RAM, if i get the 533MHz, and run it with the 2x256 MB DDR2 PC2-4300, i guess i wont be taking advantage of the 533mhz right? originally i wanted to get this one (800Mhz)

but im not sure if i have the appropiate voltage, or any other compatibilities, for that matter.

I see, thanks for the help. Well i think im not gonna get the 7950gt anymore. im gonna wait for these supposedly G8600's series to what they r all about, if they cost what they say they will, then i guess the 7950gt would b kinda obsolete, since it is still dx9 and u would b able to g et a dx10 for the same price. You dont think those will need more than a 500Wpsu right? i mean the 8800gts needs like 400, 450W.

lmao.. im lookin for something more affordable, like $200, thats why ill wait for these supposedly dx10 mid range cards. i know its hard without the real specs, but would my computer handle a 8600 (prolly a bit less than a 8800gts)
with a new power supply.. such as a X-FInity 500W?

and

if you can wait then do it.

the 86 series should be out in a month or two.

they should perform as good as or better than current 79 series cards.

and hopefully be around 199 to 250$.

a new psu is highly reccomened.

Yeah, i guess ill wait. But just so im sure. with my computer specs and this new PSU (is it even compatible with my computer?)

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1273337

would i be able to handle a G 8600 series?

processor: Intel Pentium D 820
chipset: Intel i945P
mainboard : intel prague
currently 512 MB ram, but im gettin 1 gig soon so in total will be 1 or 1.5 gigs (im not sure yet if i take off the 2x256 MB thati have)

i know my system isnt that good, could i pull it off ?

I'm running the 600 Watt version of that PSU with four hard drives, two optical drives, an Opteron 170, a 7900 GT, and a X-Fi xtrememusic perfectly fine.

*nods*

I've heard from others though that Ultra's PSUs aren't the best, I'm considering possibly upgrading mine if I upgrade my video card in the future..
