790fx-gd70 Questions

I built a 790FX-GD70 AMD 6 core system and even though the date of manufacture on the motherboard was 9/28/2010 they only installed the 1.0 bios on the board. It has 16 GB of DDR3 memory.

Now I'm getting blue screen's of death all over the place and when I called MSI and spoke to Gunga Din at tech support they tell me that there is no way to update the bios with the 6 core CPU installed!

I find that ridiculous and think there has to be some way to upgrade the bios in this machine short of buying a 2 or 4 core processor just so I can update the bios and then re-install my 6 core back into the computer?!?

Does anyone have an idea how to accomplish this because so far everything I've tried has failed miserably and I don't want to pay MSI a deposit of $180 to send this motherboard back to them and wait 8 weeks for them to send me a new one with the updated bios on it!

This is a business computer and I can't afford to take this machine down for 8 weeks and feel that MSI should have considered this problem before putting a motherboard on the market knowing that their bios couldn't handle the full capabilities of the AMD 6 core processor! I think it's highway robbery that they expect me to pay for the same motherboard twice to fix THEIR problem, wouldn't you agree?

Please let me know if there is another way to upgrade the bios?

Hi Stephanie. If your computer is posting and you have a USB flash drive, go to another computer and download the latest BIOS onto the flash drive. Connect it to a USB port and then go into the BIOS and use the the flash utility.

That won't work. As I said I spoke with the MSI techs and they told me that there is NO WAY to update the bios as long the AMD 6 core is installed on the board which is pretty messed up thing for them to do when they designed the stupid motherboard, don't you think?

I already tried to update the bios by using a flash drive and you simply can't do it.

I tried to convince MSI to just send me another motherboard and I'll just send this one back but they refuse to do that which is equally messed up in policy.

I really don't want to invest more money than the $2800 I already have tied up in this thing.

Is there anyway I can fool this thing into thinking it has a lesser processor in it for the update?

Well, then it's a lost cause because I don't have any friends here locally with a spare AM3 processor and even the local repair shops don't have a spare AM3 bench processor they can do it with because I've called every repair shop for a 70 mile circumference. All of them tell me the same thing: SOL.

I know what you mean about it not making sense because I've been working on, building and repairing computers since Tandy Trash 80's in the mid-1970s and I've never heard of such nonsense myself but the final judgement from MSI is that the bios absolutely, irrevocably can't be updated with the AMD 6 core installed in the 790FX motherboard!

Now wouldn't you love to get your hands on the genius who designed the stupid hardware or the moron who decided to send the hardware out into the marketplace knowing full well they advertised it as "AMD 6 core ready"?

This 790FX was manufactured (according to the sticker right there on the motherboard) on 8/28/2010 which means that according to the MSI website that is should have contained bios update 1.6 which would have supported all versions of the AMD 6 core AM3 socket. Instead, the board came with bios version 1.0 so the morons put the oldest version of bios on the board which means they just plain didn't give a crap about quality control.

Now according to the MSI technical support, had the bios version been 1.3 or later then I could update it with the AMD 6 core installed but anything older than 1.3 means that I have to revert to a 4 core or smaller to update the bios.

Nifty neat-o, huh?

790FX was released before Thuban which is why it needs a bios revision after launch.

But in all seriousness... I had the same problem with a Gigabyte 790x motherboard. I had to byte the bullet and get a Phenom II X3 720 just to update the BIOS.

Very frustrating.

I thought I already addressed that solution when I said that every shop locally said they don't have an AM3 dual or quad on hand to do the job unless I want to order one and then it would be just as cheap to do the job myself!

I would have to buy THEM a dual or quad bench CPU to do the update and I'll be @#$%&*$ if I'm going to donate a new processor to the local repair shop!

Would you?

It isn't that I don't want to bring it in. The local repair shops are refusing to do the job unless I want to buy another processor and if I bought a processor I could just it myself.

The whole reason I signed up to this forum was to seek another solution. I'm hoping that someone might come up with up one that DOESN'T involve have me having to buy another processor that is going to sit in a drawer and be useless after I do the bios update.

The whole idea that I have buy a second processor just to update my processor seems as insane as taking a shower with a live 120 volt power cord in my hand.

Doesn't anyone else see that or has the rest of the world gone that insane too?

You spent $2800 and wont spend another $38 to make it work? Come on, just spend the small money and even if you stuck up that cheap processor in your drawer, it would have done its purpose and you will be happily using your new system right away.

PS: mobo means MOtherBOard.

Every penny of that $2800 serves a purpose in my system and I hate to sound like a miser but buying a processor for the sole purpose of simply updating the bios and throwing that processor away is the most ridiculous money I could ever spend in my entire life.

It seems like someone telling me I have to buy an analog TV after owning a High Definition just to watch one television show and then throw the analog out after I watch the one TV show. I don't care how cheap it is; it's still highway robbery! MSI should just send me a new "Mobo" with the updated bios in it since it was their fu-up to begin with, would you agree?

look, u should of done ur research when it comes to the current motherboard, its not ur fault because u dint know, but next time u should make shur the old bios that comes with the board supports x6 cpus right out of the box, honestly maybe buy a cheap processor to update the bios. or possible buy another am3 board, some cost under 60 dollars, maybe ur specific board seems alot of hassle, anyways let me know what u choose, if u dont fix ur problem ur 2800$ is wasted , honestly id recommand a cheap cpu, or motherboard, mobo= motherboard, anways let me know

Actually, I blame MSI because they advertise the board as "AMD 6 core ready".

Now how am I supposed to know they booby-trap the thing with out of date bios?

Like I said before; they screwed this up! They should fix it!
