Ok, so I have a TrueNAS server on which I need to manage a NAS, run a Windows VM for a game server, and run a Linux VM for a software dev/machine learning server. I needed as many cores as possible for as cheaply as possible, so I picked up a 7940x off ebay for $300. Then...a couple a days later, the 5950x price drops 40%. When combined with a motherboard, the x570 and 5950x combo comes out now just $100-200 more after the price drop. Should I return the 7940x and grab a 5950x? Obviously on pure CPU performance, the 5950x is better, but is the quad-channel memory and pci lanes valuable enough to stick with the 7940x?

Thanks!

The 5950X at it's newer current $500-$540 prices is simply an awesome deal...; if it's is possible to ditch the 7960X / 300 watt space-heater generating about 70% of the 5950X's performance...I would sure do it!

The 3950X was typically faster than the 7960X at most things; and the 5950X is even faster yet! (You should be happy for years with it, I'd guess!)

Below is the 3950X vs. 5950X...

How much memory were you planning on having? 128GB would be better with the quad channel. 64GB you could do with the dual channel.
