Hey guys, so I bought a 7950 and installed it into my PC. I booted up battlefield 3 and got a great average (55-65 fp) but with everything on ultra and 1080 res sometimes the fps will drop down to 30, not for very long and only in certain scenes, but it's still annoying. One person suggested turning Mesh Quality to low, which helped a lot, but I still want to play at full ultra. I guess what I'm saying is, is this normal for this card? I feel like 300$ should get me more fps... 😛

PS: (Yes, I've COMPLETELY un-installed and re-installed the latest drivers in safe mode using the program who's name I have forgotten.)
(And no, it's not my CPU as it is only 60% utilized and my card usage hovers between 80-99%)
(Also, it's not my ram, I had the same thing going with 8gb)

Specs here:
PSU: Rosewill GREEN 630w
GPU: Gigabyte 7950 windforce edition
CPU: FX-6200
HDD: 1TB WD 7200
RAM: 4GB Corsair vengeance (Used to be 8gb, but my new cpu heat-sink cramped it out.)

Any help would be much appreciated,

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do except lower the settings to High, lower the resolution or *change your CPU*, because this one is seriously bottlenecking the performance of your video card. With a offordable FX-8350, you would get a lot more performance out of it (appro. +15 fps at your resolution). And hopefully the minimum fps will increase accordingly.

Otherwise and in general, it is absolutely normal and will happen with all cards AND with all games, regardless of the manufacturer. But honestly, if you don't want to invest in PC hardware right now (but the FX-8350 is worth it) disable your FPS monitoring program and you won't notice it. I find that dropping to 30fps for one second every couple of minutes doesn't ruin the experience at all, but that's just me!

How can it be my cpu if it's only 60% used, and my gpu usage goes up to 99%?
Also I have the step down from that CPU so I'm not very enthusiastic about upgrading...

Please don't listen to that guy. That's completely wrong and it's really annoying when people spread misinformation.

I don't know what the problem is, but it's NOT your CPU. BF3 is GPU intensive. CPU has very little to do with it. With BF3 it doesn't matter if you have a Phenom II or an i5 the fps won't differ.

I've been lurking THF for over 2 years and that post annoyed me so much I had to register to comment.

Yeah, after a lot of denial I think it is 🙁 I tried OCing, and that helped a bit, but another person said that visheras are a lot better than zambezes for gaming, so I will upgrade to an 8350 I think. Thanks for all of your hepl on the subject! 😀

Yeah, Vishera's are a lot better than Zambezi's in terms of performance. I also suggest getting low profile 8GB RAM, that might help a little bit.

btw, I feel like an idiot now. The reason I couldn't fit more RAM in is because I needed to rotate my heatsink 90 dagrees XD
Anyway, cheers.
