A little, maybe a 7870 LE would fit your needs a little better. But with the newer games coming out, IE Crysis 3, the 7870 can't max them out. So 7950 won't be overkill for the newer games as it can't even max out crysis 3 on 1600x900
8000 series does not look like they will be that good, might as well get the best single GPU you can afford now and run with it for as long as possible.

Wait what? I can agree that he should get the best he can now, but because the 8xxx series is still far off. They arent expected to release until Q4 2013 at earliest from what I have seen. The only 8xxx I have seen ANYTHING on is rebranded 7xxx series for mobile applications.
But anway.. OP, as others have said, the 7950 is a good bet. It will allow for future games, and a future upgrade to a 1080p monitor.
you guys are funny .. ok so for 99 percent of the games out there a 7870 would be a good deal.. although if i were you i would possibly look into a 1080p monitor your missing out man .. just saying..
Well,
one more important thing is that how long are u planning to keep your card?
if u want the card to last longer, get the most powerful card u can.
If u are willing to upgrade in 2 years,
a 7870 will do for 900p
