Question 8 Pin + 4 Pin

I have a mobo with a 8 pin plus 4 pin cpu power. Once I split the 8 pin for the 4 pin, does the extra 4 pin just hang there or does it need to have elec. tape around it so it doesn't short anything?

I know you didn't ask but, the only reason you'd need the 4 pin cpu power connected at all is if you're planning on doing some significant overclocking. Just sayin'.

Thanks for the info. I will tinker with a little overclocking but nothing serious. If I do hook up the 4 pin, will I see any improvement in other areas or will it just draw more power?

No difference.

The extra 4 pin is what seems to be a left over from the overclocking days. Most threads now are about undervolting

8-pin EPS is rated for 336W, the reason to have more than one is to spread the load and reduce wire heating, which increases resistance, which drops the voltage to the CPU VRMs.

An efficiency thing mostly. And the wires would get really warm powering a 250W CPU like is pretty common today, so having 12 or 16 wires is just all around better.
