The Tombraider benchmark says my old Samsung p2770 (NT) performed an average of 80 FPS. Is it possible the framerate is hire then the refreshrate of the display?

My GPU is MSI GTX970.

Solution
no. you can only disply what your monitor is rated at. if its a 60hz display then 60fps is your max. You might as well set a frame cap in the options if it allows for that. No need in wasting the horsepower on nothing :)

The refresh rate of your monitor does not limit the framerate at which your games run.

It just won't display fast enough to let you see all 80 frames that the graphics card is drawing.

This is the scenario where you can either increase the graphics quality of the game to get no visible loss in performance (average), or you can set a framelimit (at 60) so the graphics card won't go to the extra effort of drawing frames that your monitor can't display.
