I'm almost ready to get one of those fancy 7970's or a GTX 680. The thing is I have a 8120 @ 3.3GHz but I'm trying right now to install the windows patches for them. At what clock rate would my CPU need to be until the bottleneck is gone?

Solution
You would only notice a very SLIGHT bottleneck on games that are heavily reliant on both the CPU and GPU. AMD usually struggles a little bit with games like Skyrim that are not compleely GPU bound and require one or two cores with high IPC to operate certain processes within the game.

For instance Skyrim with my GTX 570 and P2 965 (which has a bit better IPC than BD) struggled to maintain over 30 fps in a few games at stock 3.4 ghz. An overclock to 3.9 ghz for me all but eliminated any bottlenecks I had.

So in short yes, in a few titles that are heavily reliant on th brute force of 2 or less cores the BD will propably stutter a little bit at resolution 1080p or under. An overclock to 4.2 gz or so should make this bottleneck...
looks like just intel owners awake this early, sorry 😛 i'd say it could be an issue for crossfire/sli but for a single gpu i don't think it'd be a problem & a slight increase in cpu speed if required is pretty simple due to the unlocked multi (cooling & psu permitting of course) thankfully i've never owned a bulldozer cpu however & the best i can do is theorize. hope all goes well

Well I'm not up early, I'm up late.
My system should handle overclocking with a 750w PSU and 30c current max load.

just a thought tho, resolution - what do you plan to play games at? if it's just a single 1920x1080 monitor i can see games being more cpu bound but spanning across several monitors in eyefinity games will be more reliant on gpu muscle

1080p

GOOD LUCK
