I heard somewhere that the 8150 is an overclocked 8120. There is a deal at micro center where you can get an 8120 with the gigabyte ud3 (the motherboard is only $50 instead of $150 so I am probably going to get it) but the 8150 is 50$ more so I was wondering if I could get the 8120 and overclock it to 3.6 ghz and get the same temps as the 8150 or if it will be higher.
Most chips are just underclocked or overclocked version of another. Too expensive to make a new foundry line for every variation of a chip.
Whats is different about the 8120 and the 8150 is they are not only the exact same chip, but they both have unlocked multipliers. Usually when this is done, the slower parts are locked, making it harder and sometimes impossible to increase the speed. Thereby adding value to the more expensive part. With the 8120, just bump the multiplier a notch or two and you have a 8150.
As for the temps, no way to tell. Even different 8150's will have somewhat different thermal performance. There are not identical clones, just similar. I can tell you I have seen a 8120 and 8150 that were both OC'd to 4.5 Ghz and the 8120 actually used less power.
Bottom line, go 8120. Unless you really want that water cooler that comes with the 8150.
