After starting the firmware upgrade with Samsung Magician, it prompted "PC will be shut down automatically after firmware update" and I clicked OK. The shutdown started but did not finish for some reason. I probably should have dug into event logs before telling Windows to reboot, but alas I did not, and now I am sitting at a "Reboot and Select proper Boot device" black screen of death. I've found articles of folks saying the firmware update could still be running on the disk in the background. This seems odd, but I am hopeful and would prefer not to have to restore from a backup. Anyone else seen similar behavior or have an idea how to resolve? Again this is an 840 EVO 512GB.

Apparently it was running in the background. I forced myself to walk away and stop trying to troubleshoot for a few hours. I came back, tried to boot, and finally it was recognized again and has the latest firmware. Not cool Samsung...not cool.
Hey there, jimmyc802.

Not sure if the update would still run in the background. This sounds like an issue for which you should turn to the drive manufacturer's customer support to see if the guys there have a solution.

On the other hand, you could try the drive with a different computer by connecting it as a secondary storage drive (either externally or internally), to see if it's properly recognized and if you can initiate the firmware update again. If you're able to complete it this way, you might be able to boot to Windows properly afterwards (when you connect it to your computer again).

Hope that helps. Please let me know how it goes.
