Hey everyone,
I'm running a 3 year old msi gx640, with win8 pro and RAM I'd increased myself to 2x4gb last year. (stock setting was 4gb) Things were smooth.

But lately, my laptop has been having some serious performance issues. Yesterday, while running skype for a few hours, the cursor movement slowed up and the computer froze altogether. No response on trying to open task manager either.
On restarting the laptop, I see that on IDLE my memory usage is 85-90%, and I can hear my laptop fan really being exerted. "Service Host: Local System" uses up around 1.5-2gb of memory but I can't see what the problem is! Also using a laptop cooling pad so I dont think cooling is an issue. :/

I uninstalled several programs which I don't use and that helped temporarily but the problem came back fast. Tried a malware test after that too but it doesnt seem to help either!

Suggestions please?

Solution
I guess you have a virus or something. Try a fresh install of windows and instal Microsoft Security Essentials as anti virus.
I could give a better answer if:
- you provide what programs do you use
- was windows update running
- do you have windows backup set to run on schedule
- do you have defragmentation set to run on schedule (this wont affect RAM, bua affects performance)
- do you have a antivirus program ?
- do you use torrents (they tend to use alot of RAM if you download multiple large files....)

I still suspect a virus, 80 -90% Ram (windows update will not use 6-7GB of ram 😛) and high CPU usage (high fan speed even @ idle with cooling pad etc).

You can eliminate unwanted files to increase extra space on hard drive for increasing speed and performance. You can install a new window or old window again by eliminating the previous window as it could be infected with a virus. There could be many solutions like these.
