860 EVO - worth the upgrade?

Solution
NVMe biggest bonus is in large file transfers etc, so if that's off the table, everything's going to be medium - small, so you'll not see the advantage of it as much.

If the MX 500 lives up to its stated performance as compared to the similar Samsungs then sure it'll be worth the wait, but that's an If. SSDs are fast enough, there's comparatively little difference between the top units or mid range or low end, so it's really a moot point and a brand thing.

Not worth it. 2 weeks ago I purchased a 1TB 850 Evo and I am not upgrading. Yeah, it is only 30 bucks more but it isn’t worth the hastle to upgrade, being that you already have one.

Em... Question - what 860 EVO has to do with NVMe? Or I missed something here...

Its available in m.2 form but its still a sata drive so basically the same drive.

To me its not worth upgrading over an 850evo, little to no improvement due to the drives already being near max on the sata3 interface.
Initially list price was about $100 above the 850's. Nice to see that they have come back down to a more reasonable level.

Been looking for boot drive for laptop.
I guess no reason to get NVMe for it.
Been thinking to buy 250GB EVO 860 or MX500 since 860 was only $10 more than 850 on amazon. But now it's $100+ everywhere (gone on amazon for some reason) and MX500 on preorder only for $80 on B&H (MX300 still $90 there).
Worth waiting for price drop down for 860 EVO or wait till MX500 hit the street? Or should I grab 850/mx300?

Exactly.
I wouldn't even change out my older 840 EVO's for an 860.
No user facing benefit.

Forgot to mention, was looking for m.2 form for laptop.
Anyway it's back on stock on Amazon. So question is - $80 for MX500 M.2 or $100 for 860 EVO M.2?
Worth $20?

Could be wrong but as far as I know only 850 Pro has 5 year warranties.
Basic 850 has 3 year warranty. At least that what people said in reviews (been watching dozens of them for last few weeks while looking for boot drive)

It's a laptop. Check voltage use during loads etc. Performance wise it'd be impossible for you to tell the difference, only a benchmark can do that. Whichever uses less juice is the better buy overall as laptop battery power is a premium. If they are close enough to basically be the same, cheaper is usually just as good.

"people said in reviews"
Why would you listen to them, instead of actually looking at Samsung?

850 EVO Series
120 GB / 250 GB - 5 years or 75 TBW
500 GB / 1 TB - 5 years or 150 TBW
2 TB / 4 TB - 5 years or 300 TBW

850 PRO Series - 10 years

Watched reviews for both and it looks like they are identical, and for some tests (1TB capacity) MX500 even better than 860 EVO. For 250GB they r almost same (+25GB capacity for Crucial).

I got MX300 for my kid's laptop as a boot drive and got no questions or problems whatsoever.
Now need boot drive for my laptop which I'll use not only for gaming but for some After Effects editing and Photoshop/Illustrator (tho nothing major, for big projects or heavy files I got desktop)

So was looking for something better than MX300.
Should I jump to 960? Or it will show no difference while working with Photoshop/Illustrator/AE?
Thanks in advance

My bad, should take a look at Samsung before posting.
Thought reviews from zdnet, pcworld etc trustworthy
;)
Thanks.

The stuff you find in "reviews"...take with a LARGE block of salt.

Between the 850 EVO, 860 EVO, 850 Pro, Crucial MX300 or MX500...
I defy anyone here to take a blind test and tell me the difference.
If I were running the test, I'd even slip in an 840 EVO, just to mess with you.

The 960? Does your laptop support that particular drive and form factor?

Yep.
Dell 7567, can take both sata and NVMe.
I'll keep all games on secondary drive anyway, only system and soft on boot drive.
Not sure if it worth $40 diff from MX500 and $20 from 860 comparing to performance boost.

Question was do I gonna have any benefits from using NVMe for running PS/ILL/AE or there will be almost no different. Once again, no 4k files or any super heavy loads.
And MX500, is it worth waiting till it hit market (probably next few months or so, only preorders for m.2 right now)?

Well if someone been looking for Crucial MX500 M.2 MFR # CT250MX500SSD4, been in chat with Crucial rep, so we should expect "...it has been expected to be released sometime this month..." and "...Generally, the M.2 versions are at a close or same price as the full sized versions, so I'd expect the same if it follows the same trend as our past drives...."
Standard version right now $79.99 @ Amazon, so I guess M.2 will be around same price tag.
All preorders for $89 and up to $105 not worth buying.

I have 850 EVO - 500GB X 2 SSD's I use for various things like games and system stuff. I just installed the 860 EVO into the M.2 slot for Windows and random programs to monitor my system. I love them both, very fast.
