Hey all. I built a Ryzen 5 1600 PC OC to 3.8ghz/ 16gb 3000 mhz RAM last month and not liking it at all. For the games i play such as WoW, OW, LoL, CSGO, BF1, and maybe some other AAA titles, usually tends to favor better single core performance. I see drops in FPS compared to my old 4690k. For gaming, its the 7700k still worth it compared to the 8700k/8600k? I'm asking because i play 1080p/144hz with a GTX 1070. Since the purchase was early, i can still refund both my CPU and motherboard to the full price. I have until October 27 to fulfill the refund.

EDIT: Reason i upgraded my 4690k was because i had 2 dead DIMM slots in which i couldn't run dual channel memory (This was because of bent pins in the socket). I was also getting tired of playing games and wanting to watch youtube videos or twitch streams, the FPS would drop heavily because of the CPU maxing out.

I have almost the exact setup you are looking to get (i7 7700k 4.8Ghz, GTX 1080 2.1Ghz OC) and still get less than 144fps in WoW at 2k resolution. I don't think I would purchase an intel processor from this gen until they start soldering the IHS to the CPU die again to get their crazy temperatures under control. Unless money is no object then why not. While youre at it though I would spring for either a delidded model from siliconlottery.com or buy a delidding tool and do it yourself.

Intel is still king for single thread performance. So yeah I could see a drop in FPS switching to a Ryzen. However, Its not major.

The i7 7700K and i5 8600K are practically identical (Both Kaby-Lake and [strike]4Core/8Thread[/strike]). The i7 8700K adds two more cores, but at $380, its starting to get into Ryzen 1800X zone. Personally I would pick up a Z270 and i7 7700K for cheap because they are being discontinued due to the Z370 / 8700K release. I saw the 7700K for $260 last week and a Z270 for $120.

In my position, I cannot go back to the 4690k because of the motherboard. Been unstable and cannot get it to work well anymore. I would love to switch back to Intel, but getting Coffee Lake is almost impossible. I'm trying to make a decision before October 27 considering that's the cutoff date for a full refund of my motherboard and CPU. Really have no idea what i should do right now.
