if the 8800 gt and 9800 and 240 cards are the same can you run an 8800 gt with a 9800 or 240 in sli?

The 240 is NOT the same. It has an entirely new GPU.

I wouldnt recommend trying to run a 9800 GT and 8800 GT in SLI, but it might be theoretically possible. While they are very similar there are some minor differences.

I think you could probably run 2 monitors with them separately, but not sure about the SLI bridge aspect working correctly.

What does everyone else think?

In theory its possible if:
1) You have one of the older 9800GT from before the process node shrink, and

2) You are able to successfully flash it with an 8800GT BIOS.

However, this is pure theory and I have not heard a success story yet.

Take a look at SLI/CF FAQ:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/245454-33-crossfire-faqs
In general the cards have to be exact model(For Nvidia)so you can' SLI a 8800GT with 9800GT or 240 in SLI.
But if you can find a 9800GT which has the same BIOS like 8800GT or flash the BIOS of your 8800GT to a 9800GT's BIOS,you can SLI them but its not recommended and its risky

i did an RMA on a 8800GT and got a 9800GT in return. on the PCB was a sticker that said "8800GT" Both run a G92 core so if you don't brick it on the flash i don't see why it wouldn't work to SLI them.

im sure you'll hear from someone who has actually done it soon enough.

I looked at the BIOS flashing technique too and decided it wasn't worth the risk. It's just so much easier to get a matching card and go SLI the "proper" way.
