8800 gts freezing issues

About a month ago my 8800 gts was giving me some minor artifacts, it went away a few hours later. This morning it came back but the worst of it is after restarting my computer a couple of times the artifacts are now gone but the system locks up at the start up screen

does anyone have any idea why this is?
