8800GT owners. Whats a good, safe overclock?

I have mine set @ 700/1750/2000 and fan speed @ 60%.

I got about a 150 increase in my 3dmark score compared to the factory specs so I'd like to keep it this way but I also don't want to over do it. So I am wondering what everyone else sets their overclock too so I can get an idea if mines too high or unsafe.

Yeah, that's strange. It shouldn't. You can safely push core beyond 700mhz though, make sure shader is linked. Also, if you have the stock single slot cooler version, adjust fan speed and watch temperature.

OP meant 2000MHz effective speed. So really, it's 1000Mhz, which some people say it's dangerous to run at.

That's what I meant. The memory on 8800gt is pretty shoty. :p

There has been people running the 8800GT at 1000Mhz memory from the time it first came out without a single issue.

Of course there are. There are always lots of people out there doing(or claim they're doing) lots of things. Majority of people can't get it there. :p

I am running my 8800GT 650 core, 1654 shaders and 1100 mem justr fine.. with stock cooler... idles around 44-54C and never goes over 74C under load ( playing COD4 for hours )

I am curious if that is good or avg or whatnot

here's my validation

Pretty avg. alright.

You may want to tweak down the memory speeds down to like 950MHz. There won't be any noticeable difference in frames. There has been reports on 8800GT dying because the memory clock was higher than 1000MHz, so you may want to heed this.

after reading the net... it seem sit was a problem with preproduction cards.. memory would not clock over 1000 ( 2000 ddr) seems there is no negative trend with retail production cards... some people overclocking to 2300 ( ddr ) in some cases

A safe over clock would be any GPU temp is a few degrees celsius below the threshold temp. There's also an instant fry temp which you'd have to be a real jackass to try and reach because it's about 30-40 degrees celsius HIGHER than the GPU burnout temp. For the memory you're going to get lockups and signal loss before anything dangerous happens. For 8800GT you're looking at a threshold of 115C & 127C burnout temps. Instant fry is about 157C.

Don't go 115. :na:
And you'll notice severe artifacting long before that.

As for overclocking, 1100mem is far above average, 650 core is far below average. Did you stress it? 1100 memory could be shaky. Increase core, you should be able to do at least 700, likely more. And decrease memory if it fails stress, it doesn't make as much difference. Keep core and shader linked while ocing.

Well as far as the don't go there comment, it's actually perfectly safe to go 115 because 127 is the burnout. That number is just the threshold number they give you so...we will say 115 is safe temp, 12 degrees below burnout. I think you're just experiencing paranoia.

Sure, go ahead and try it. :na:

Just keep in mind your screen will be a little busy with all the artifacts. :p

While the vidcards can handle temps like 115C, it's really not a good idea.

As dagger has said, there may be tons of artifacts. Once my 8800GTS OCed hits 71C, everything starts artifacting, then the whole game freezes. So I just maxed out the fan, and so far it's all good.

it's a great idea. you ain't gonna see artifacts unless you OC the mem, shader, or GPU too high. artifacting is not temp. dependant. 115 is safe, 120 is safe, 125 is real close to burnout capable temps.

Trust me, even at stock, there'll be artifacts at those temperatures. If you can get it that high at stock, of course. :p

Maybe, maybe not. One of the reviews had a ECS silent 8800GT and under load it hit 110C. No artifacts though.

Artifacting can happen because of high temps. All my experience has shown me that. Bring in proof that it doesn't.

I run mine daily at 720/1775/980 (core/shader/mem), no problems here. Also my drivers fail when it hits 100C, and while gaming or running CUDA apps (in particular F@H) it'll hit 95C easily. Thanks to my PSU controlling an 80mm fan directly blowing over the card, as well as an exhaust fan, it doesnt go over 95 in the summer. Stock cooler too, plan on finding a dead 8800GTS 512 and swapping the cooler for the dual-slot one (I like it more than aftermarket coolers, gives it a nice, clean look.

My general thought on when your overclocking in terms of temps is what I like to think of as my (yeah I'm making this one up, so I call it my own) 60/80 rule. CPU should not exceed 60celsius under the most extreme conditions and GPU should not exceed 80celsius also under the most extreme conditions, if they do look into better cooling. But this is just my guideline, everyone does things differently and have different standards. So do what you feel comfortable with.

Just because you can supposubly take something to a certain temp safely does not mean that you should.
