8800GT SLI headache

I'm having some issues with a SLi setup with two 8800 GT 512mb. Performance increase is only about 5-10fps in games like Crysis, COD4, UT3, and the image is "jerky", like the fps isn't dropping but its "jerky" anyway.

When running S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky, the game runs so jerky, it gives me a headache. 3dmarks 06 reports no sli.

I'm wondering if the PSU is up to the job, both +12 rails have 34A combined. When I try to change the speed of the second cards fan, it doesn't change?? When overclocking both cards (same) the system goes even slower!!

System spec is;

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.00GHz (Socket AM2)
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)
2 x Nvidia Geforce 8800GT 512mb (600MHz core) (1x XFX BlackDog, 1x Gainward Bliss)
2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache
Enermax 535W FMAII PSU
Vista HomePremium 32bit
Nvidia driver version 178.13 (newest)

Well I think your psu is probably a bit overwhelmed. Normally, I would think this is a driver issue given what you are describing but it is also likely your psu can't handle the setup. Try running with SLI disabled. If you get better frames it is most likely a driver issue, if they don't it is probably an issue with your psu.

Edit: I think I read your first post wrong. It sounds like this is either a driver issue or bottleneck issue as your cpu is a bit slow for SLI. What resolution are you running?

I have Driver Sweep'd all rouge nv drivers from the system and re-installed latest nforce and forceware's. Seems to have cleared up the "jerky" issue, however the performance increase is still barely noticeable! I feel like the cards are being strangled by the psu. Is there anyway I can tell, without going out and spending money on a more powerfull psu that I might not require anyway?

I got rid of "choppy video" by uninstalling norton anti virus. I don't know if you use any anti virus software or how much time you spend surfing the net, but it helped cure my problem. I'm using vista 32 basic.

Bullguard doesn't seem to make much difference on or off, but like I said previously, the issue is now that there is virtually no performance increase wit SLI enabled. I have the graph on so I can see it working, but at most it gives around 5fps more (peak, not average)

I don't think so. Back when the 8800gtx came out people found out that their OCed FX procs were bottlenecking the gpu. It wasn't until C2D that they unleashed the true power of it. You have a similar proc to what they were using but more gpu power. Although, at 1680x1050 you shouldn't be running into too much of a problem since that res isn't cpu bound.

Right, todays update! I went and got a new PSU (Hiper HPU-4M880) and guess what! no change!

SO, I swapped the cards round and put the XFX in the top slot, everything installed kind of smoothly, after vista had a benny about it, I went to enable SLI, it started to enable, screen goes black as normal, then the screen with the flashing cursor in the top left, as normal... but there it stayed... 5min 10min 20min, nothing. PC hd not stalled, was still running the rest of the system, but no image. SO I rebooted, vista had another benny, re-installed nv drivers etc, it then happend again.. twice. SO now I have moved the card back to the second slot. SLi enables but no performance gains. I think the card is naf'd, it wont go into sli mode.

I think I'll be getting an RMA for it. Might look at getting a better card now rather than going SLI!!

Thoughts?

I know nvidia cards don't like being different brands, especially if they are clocked differently. This could your issue, although you might just be better off getting a different gpu.

I used to run an XFX card and and Asus card in SLI with no performance issues at all and the XFX card was clocked higher than the Asus, so you might want to check what you thought you knew.

Good for you. I can tell you that mixed manufacturer SLI has been support for a while but people have had issues with it, especially when they are clocked differently. It isn't going to be an issue every time. It is just one last thing to try before giving up completely, notice how I didn't suggest it as the issue immediately since it is sort of a last resort thing to check. Besides, I don't see you helping out.
