So, a relative of mine has an nivdia 8800 gt and an MSI motherboard (model currently unknown). The problem is that the card litterally does not fit into the board. The port is a proper PCIe 2.0, but there is a capacitor sticking up off of the motherboard, blocking the card. The capacitor, obviously, cannot be moved, and is too tighly attached to be bent out of the way.

The question in the end: can this card fit into the motherboard or was it a waste of money?

Where did you get the 8800gt? Anyways, before buying things such as cpus, ram and gpus, you better do research or do a good guess then research. If it's like a cap sticking out, you should of visually thought of how it would look like installed and look for clearance for ram, capacitor and southbridge heatsink. If it doesn't look like it will work, don't chance it. So you should try to refund it and say that my motherboard's layout prevents me from installing. Good luck on the rma.
EDIT: For spelling :D
