Currently have a 512mb Asus 8800GT which i have had for the past 2 or so years, finally looking to upgrade, and wanting to know what my viable options are. I am using a 19" LCD monitor at 1280x1024 and not looking to upgrade anytime soon, so i only need a card capable of giving me max (or close to) settings at that resolution.

In my price range i'm looking at the following - XFX GTX260 896MB, Sapphire Radeon HD4890 1GB, or XFX HD 5770 xXx 1GB.

Out of those, which would be the best upgrade option from my 8800GT?

My system specs :
Q6600 stock - not overclocked
2x 2GB Corsair Dominator PC8500 - at 266mhz to match CPU bus
Asus striker ii formula
620W Cooler Master "Real Power" modular PSU
Asus 8800GT 512MB
320GB Seagate Barracuda

At that resolution a 5750 will do you quite perfectly, but if you want more frames for the sake of it go ahead with the 5770 and if you want more go with the 4890.

Best upgrade from 8800GT would depend whether you wanted some future proofing or performance, future proof with 5750/5770 or performance with 4890.

Cheers guys, i guess the 4890 it is then. When there are more DX11 games i'll go for a higher range card than the 5770, i have plenty of other PC's here i can give my old cards to, so future-proofing ain't a concern.

dont waste your money now as your card ( 8800gt ) is more than capable of playing games at 1280x1024 even 1600x1200, 1900x1200 with maximum settings, wait untill fermi is released as the graphics market will have much better products with much better prices ( i have hd 4670 and i play everything maximum with 4-8x AA at this resolution - dx10 - except crysis - 1024x768 very high dx10, but i can play it at 1280x1024 with very high dx9 hack )

I would hold back if I was you and wait a little for the 5830. You could be saving yourself some money in the future!

+ Lots of new DX11 titles are "just" around the corner...

You buy a 4890 now and you will have to wait, what, 2 Years before you upgrade again and can play Any DX11 game.

Buying old tech now because there are no (few) DX11 games now is a silly argument...
many of the new games coming are going to be DX11

Here's a few due soon:

Dirt 2 (released)
STALKER: Call of Pripyat (released)
Alien vs Predator (Feb 16)
Crysis 2
Battleforge (released)
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (March)
Dungeons and Dragons Online
F1 2010
Genghis Khan – Treasure Hunter
The Lord of the Rings Online
Race Driver: Grid 2

Also, buy the best you can, 5770+, even at that res so you can turn all options on and run the new DX11 features without too much of a hit.

And like the guys says - the 8800 ain't too bad for a "little" longer and maybe see 5830 or Fermi impact on pricing... or not :D

Well i'm having problems playing games even at high with this, so that's why i'm looking for a new card.

Bioshock has to be played at 1024x768 to even get to "high" settings with 2x AA. GTA4 has to also be in 1024x768 but that only allows me medium-high settings and even then the shadows are absolutely horrible.

I want a new card cos i'm buying Bioshock 2 this week and i want to get Assassins creed 2 when that's out for PC, and if my PC can't even play the above games at my desktop res, i can imagine how bad newer game will play.

Whenever the 5830 gets released, my city won't get it for at least another 6-10 weeks. So that's why i'm not inclined to "wait" for anything to get released.

So if i get the 5770 instead, how much better would it be for me to get a 2nd one later on (so 2 5770's in crossfire), as compared to the 5850?

@ outlw6669, i stated that i won't be upgrading my monitor for a while because i don't want to. i have just recently bought 2x 22" monitors for my girlfriend and brother respectively, but they are too big for me to use. I prefer this monitor.

his processor is fine i have phenom 2 x3 710 with hd 4670 and it is great at 1280x1024, and the q6600 is not worse than x3 710 it is even better in some situations, maybe it is a software problem with drivers or graphics control panel or operating system.

Bro - Cancel it.

I got from Play.com for 26.99 (free delivery) with the Terminus Armour Pre-Order bonus :D

Wiki:
If the game was pre-ordered at GameStop or Play.com, players received the Terminus Armor, which grants increased running speed and shields, and the M-490 Blackstorm Heavy Weapon, a gun that creates a gravitational singularity(miniature black holes).

Well i don't live in the US, so the option of online purchasing is very limited. Additionally my city is extremely isolated, so we do not get products here until several weeks after they are released (this also means that postage is not cheap, or not available).

If the 5830 is supposed to be out on February 5th, i'll at least wait until then and have a look-see what my online purchasing options are. I would much rather get a 5850 instead, however while you guys pay only ~$250 for it, over here it is about $400 USD.

@outlw6669 - Yea i know, however i am using 64x windows 7 and DX 10 for Bioshock, so that's having a slight impact on my performance. Btw yes, all drivers and everything else is all updated.
