my specs

Intel E4500 2.2ghz (OC@3ghz) /w ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro
4gb G.SKILL 4GB (4 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L
EVGA GeForce 8800 GT Superclocked
CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
LCD 1920x1080p

I was planning on upgrading the cpu but was told GPU would be better soooooo.... What Card would be good at around $150-$180ish (US)

I know everyone wants to say 5850, but $250+ is just not going to happen. Ive promised not to go higher after already having to buy another laptop :).I would have this card a while. Wont be another upgrade to this comp till next Fall., and that will probably be the cpu and not even the gpu.

Assuming my choices are between 4870, 4890, 5770. Whats the better deal? Would I still see a decent performance boost with these cards? In other words is it worth an upgrade if im not getting the mighty 5850 and not xfire'ing any of these? I wouldn't mind OC'ing them as well if any are capable.

The 4870 and 4890 are better for DX10 and DX9, so they'll be a better choice for the next year or so. The 4890 is basically an overclocked 4870. It's possible you can overclock a 4870 and get the same performance as a 4890 and you may save $40. No guarantee. I think the 4890 may be just outside of your price range.

Long term, the 5770 will be better since it can use DX11.
