Hello guys. A buddy of mine has a computer with a msi760gm-e51 mb, athlon2 x4 2.6ghz, 16gb ddr-3 RAM, 500gb 7200rpm hd, and a radeon r9 290. I know he doesn't have the best mb, hd, or processor, but we're keeping an eye on a phenomx6 on ebay. But he only gets about 30-50 fps on Battlefield 4 and the same with War Thunder. I was wondering if the arrangement of the RAM sticks would make any difference? I think he has it set up 8gb(1) 4gb(2) and the last 2x2gb in 3 and 4 slot.

Solution

Accroding to the website, the Motherboard is AM3:http://ca.msi.com/product/mb/760GME51.html#hero-specification

also consult this list for exact CPU support: http://ca.msi.com/support/mb/760GME51.html#support-cpu

Again, the order...
Nope. That cpu is the bottleneck. It is sadly underpowered compared to the r9 290.

The x6 will definitely boost performance Just make sure its compatible with the mobo.

If budget allows , I still recommend going for a current gen mobo and CPU (such as the fx 6300 or i3), to get the most out of your r9 290 GPU.

Thanks for the response. Would a Phenom x4 3.4ghz work? He has an AM2+ socket, but I heard you can hook up AM3's to it. So the order of the RAM does not matter, after he gets a new CPU?

Whoa. Hold on. You're saying your friend put several different size RAM sticks on the same board? Am I reading that right? That should NEVER be done. EVER. Always use the same kit of ram with the same size for each stick, or multiple kits of ram but all the same company, memory size, and model. This could totally be the reason for your problems.

Again, the order of the ram does not matter. You can try moving it around, but it will give absolutely no performance gains (atleast in gaming). The CPU currently in the system is just very weak.

Thank you very much. Just ordered a Phenom 965 X4 3.4ghz for budget reasons. We're going to re-install windows, update/install drivers, yada yada. Hopefully that does the trick.
